After ending her passionless marriage, Cali Reynolds is eager to live out her forbidden fantasies. Her first step is attending new members’ night at The Den, the most exclusive sex club in town. Perhaps here she can find a man who understands her desire to be dominated…
At first, Jake McCallister thinks Cali has come to his club for the wrong reasons. But when he discovers she is seeking fulfillment after years of denial, he’s intrigued—and takes it upon himself to initiate her into the pleasures she’s been missing.
Her first encounter with Jake is everything Cali has always craved, and more; she’s not prepared for the feelings he inspires in her. And Jake is just as surprised by his overwhelming attraction to Cali. As their play intensifies, so does their bond. Now, Jake doesn’t want anyone but Cali—but is he ready to officially claim her? And will she submit to being his forever?
She stood before him, illuminated by the light strategically placed around the edges of the room. Her hands were clasped tightly in front of her, her chin lifted, shoulders back, but her eyes refused to meet his despite his instructions.
He grabbed the back of her hair and gave a soft, but firm tug. Her head jerked and her gaze flew up to meet his.
“Look at me and answer my question. What do you want?”
Her eyes widened, the green depths deepening as her pupils dilated more.
“Answer, or we’re done.”
After a brief, tense pause, she spoke. “I told you, I don’t honestly know.” Her cheeks flushed. “I want a man to make me come. No vibrators. No toys. I want…” Her gaze darted away from his, but with a tug on her hair it returned. “I want a man’s touch. His control. His confidence in owning my body and giving me everything I want. I want sex that is also about me…not just him.”
A good start. He could give her that. Easily. But he sensed there was more. “And…” He let the question trail off.
She swallowed, her lips working as she gathered her courage. “I don’t know,” she admitted, the honesty projected in both her voice and eyes. “My sexual experience is so embarrassingly limited that I don’t honestly know what I want outside of what I just told you. I don’t know what I like or don’t like because anything outside of vanilla sex has never been given to me.” She sucked in a breath of air like she was shocked at the admission.
Jake clenched his free hand behind his back, the hidden action his only break in the calm, controlled facade he displayed. The desire to do exactly as she asked was so overwhelming it took everything in him to hold himself still.
“Very good,” he reassured her as he released her hair and massaged her tender scalp before moving his hand to her chin. “Your honesty will be rewarded. But first, let’s set some boundaries for this Scene.”
The tension in her stiffly held shoulders immediately subsided with the slow release of her breath. “Yes,” she said, the relief communicated in her eyes.
Idly, his thumb caressed the soft skin on the underside of her chin. His only contact with her at the moment. “Let’s start with what excites you,” he said gently. “When I ask you about something, answer me honestly. No moderating your responses. Do you understand?”
Her lips compressed, her muscles tightening once again. “Yes.”
“Good.” He rewarded her by rubbing the pad of his thumb over the lush skin of her bottom lip. Her eyelids drifted down in a sensual half closed flutter. “Does the thought of bondage excite you?”
A pause. “Yes.”
Her eyes closed like she was testing the thought. “Yes.”
Her eye flew open, followed by a long pause. She licked her lips. “Yes.”
“Anal play?” He knew the answers from her application, but she needed to respond. To verbally admit to what she wanted.
“Yes.” Her replies were getting softer, barely spoken.
“Spankings, flogging, whips?”
A hesitant, “Yes…I think. Some.”
“Threesomes or more?”
A deep inhale held then slowly released. “Maybe.”
“I…don’t know.” She chewed her lip, her gaze finally darting away before returning to meet his. “Maybe. But not tonight.”
Her breathing was now erratic, her fingers so tightly clenched together that her knuckles were white. Her cheeks were flushed an attractive shade of pink, but her spine was still stiff and straight. The questions were obviously hard for her to answer.
“And dominance. Will you submit to me, Cali? Are you willing to follow my commands, to let me lead you through the Scene?”
Q: What would you like readers to know about the book before they read it?
A: This book is truly a romance. It revolves around BDSM, but the story is about the emotional journey the main characters take as they learn to accept their sexual needs and desires. It’s definitely steamy, but it’s driven by the characters not the sex.
Q: What do you hope readers will take with them after they’ve read the book?
A: This story is about taking risks, trust and acceptance. Sometimes, you have to really put yourself out there to get what you want. It’s scary, hard and there is always the chance of failure. But the harder and scarier it is, the bigger the reward can be.
Ultimately, I always hope that readers will walk away happy, that they will enjoy the characters and be satisfied with the outcome. I read romance for the warm feeling I get at the end, when the characters do get to live happily ever after and I strive to give that to my readers.
Q: Who is your favorite character in this book?
A: I really like Cali. She’s strong in a completely unassuming way. She takes a risk and goes after real happiness instead of staying in an unsatisfying, safe relationship. It not easy to walk away from a stable life and it takes a lot of courage to go against people’s expectations, but she does it. She’s takes that risk and finds the great reward.
Q: Is there a character who gives you fits and makes you want to go ninja?
A: YES! But he’s actually okay in this book. The one that’s killing me now is the main character in Book 3. I could ninja Seth all over the place—kchop, kchop! Schwew, got that out of my system. Thanks. *grins*
As for this book, not that I remember. Jake was hard to nail down for a bit, but he came around after I slapped him a few times (yeah, he liked that—not that he’ll admit it).
Q: You may have noticed we like to include our favorite quote in our reviews of the books we read. What is your favorite quote from this book?
A: Jake to Cali after an emotionally intense Scene at The Den:
“Safety and security over happiness? It’s a hard choice. It’s not easy to give up what you know in the hopes of finding something better. What if you never find anything better? That’s the risk most people won’t take. Even if it means never being completely happy.”
Q: What’s up next for you?
A: More Wicked Play books! I just turned in Book 3, Bonds of Desire and I’m thinking about writing a side novella for next year’s Christmas Anthologies around two of the smaller side characters. But then I need to get working on Book 4 in the series as soon as the holidays are over. It’s good to be busy and I’m really enjoying writing the Wicked Play series.
