Evie Williams lives a boring life – and she likes it that way. Her world is very black and white. Routine is good. Excitement is bad. She’s happy to play by her self-imposed rules. After all, they help her keep her abusive, stalker ex-boyfriend at bay. Or so she believes…
But there’s more to the world than Evie could possibly imagine. Elves, vampires, witches and pro-Humanity terrorists are very real – and she can sense the danger they pose to her and others. Worst of all, they just realized how precious Evie’s gift is.
As the world Evie never imagined possible closes in on her, Chris, the vampire in charge of studying Evie, is getting more and more interested in her… and it has nothing to do with his loyalty to his vampire father.
Blood Red: The Complete First Season is a story of unlikely heroes, damsels who refuse to be in distress and political conflicts solved by fights to the death.
Chris felt something smashing against his chest.
The strength was enough to knock him off his feet and hit his head on the pavement with a muffled thud.
His hand drifted to his wound. Thick, syrupy blood oozed from his chest. He had been shot. Whoever had shot him had missed his heart by a couple of inches.
It took Chris a moment to recover. Silver bullets would’ve knocked him out for a few hours. As it was, he only needed a moment. He came to and saw Evie being pulled out of his car. She landed on her back. She moaned when her body made the same muffled sound Chris’ head had made. Chris sat up as the guy was pointing a gun at Evie, getting ready to shoot her.
Chris saw red at the sight of her lying on the floor, helpless. He was on his feet, grabbing the guy by his neck, in no time. Chris’ other hand moved the man’s gun away, crushing bones until the man dropped it. The guy screamed.
“Fuck,” someone said from the other side of the street. “We should’ve used those silver suckers.”
Chris lifted his arm and the guy with it. The guy’s feet left the ground and he started kicking around, trying to hurt Chris.
Chris’ eyes darted around. Two guys were in a truck parked on the other side of the street — the same car he had seen earlier. When their eyes met Chris’, they started panicking. The guy who had mentioned silver was behind the wheel. They screamed at each other and drove off, abandoning their friend. Chris read the plate on the car, making the mental note to check it out later.
He turned to the guy he was almost choking to death. “Who sent you?”
The other guy’s only response was a series of grunts. He raised an arm, trying to claw Chris’ face.
“Who was it?” Chris asked.
The guy spit on Chris’ face.
He lost the little control he had over his temper. He crushed the guy’s throat, killing him. He dropped the body and rubbed the spit off his face with the sleeve of his jacket.
Chris turned around, ready to make sure Evie was OK.
She was terrified. Her eyes travelled from his blood soaked shirt to his extended fangs and his enraged eyes. She was looking at him like he was her worst nightmare.
He took a step towards her, offering her his hand. Maybe if he acted normal, she wouldn’t be so freaked out.
Evie leaned back, gasping.
Chris pulled away, his hand dropping at his side. “I’m not going to hurt you, Evie.”
She didn’t move. She didn’t take her eyes off of him. All she did was let out these shallow gasps that were pure torture to him.
“Please, say something.”
She gulped. “What the fuck are you?”
He knew what he should do. He knew he should glamour her, have her forget what she just saw and send her back upstairs. He had to protect the Rule. That meant lying to her. That meant pretending to be just another guy. He didn’t want lies between them. He didn’t want what he was to taint what he had with Evie — as pointless and silly as that might sound.
So, doing what he should do — what he had to do — was no longer an option for Chris. Damned be the consequences. Damned be the compulsory death sentence.
“I’m a vampire, Evie.”
Q: Romance readers have a lot of choices these days. What makes Blood Red: The Complete First Season stand out in the crowd?
A: I always looked to TV and film to feed my Urban Fantasy fix. I used to be a huge True Blood fan. I wanted to find something like that in book form. I wanted a solid cast of characters with interesting plots – with a big serving of steam and action (of all kinds) on the side.
Like most writers, when I can’t find what I want to read, I write it.
Some writers are using serialized fiction for ebooks like popular writers used to write “paperbacks” back in the day: one single story broken into several smaller parts. I didn’t want to do that. I wanted to follow the lead of other writers, who are using serials as something like TV series in book format. I wanted a complex story. And I wanted meaty conflicts and characters for my story. I wanted a world that felt epic and a love story that could shine in that world.
I think romance readers will love Chris and Evie and they’ll love the world of Blood Red!
Q: We like to include our favorite quote in our reviews of the books we read. What is your favorite quote from Blood Red: The Complete First Season?
A: My favorite quote from Blood Red: The Complete First Season is:
Chris let out a bitter laugh. “The worst monsters walk in broad daylight, Evie. They act and look like good people, but they are not.”
About Vivian Wolkoff
Vivian Wolkoff has always been in love with words – even before she could read them. So, it should be no surprise she turned to writing and reading very early in life. Then, she decided to do some living and find out what else she loved. After college and moving cross-continent twice, Vivian decided to turn to self-publishing again. She is the author of Showmance, the first book in a trilogy about a fake celebrity couple and their crazy fans, and the psychological thriller Love You To Death.
