Yesterday was Thanksgiving here in the U.S.. Hopefully you’ve recovered and you’ve already done your black Friday shopping.
Now it’s time to get back to the business of reading romance. Author Serena Bell is here today talking about her recent release, Yours To Keep.
Sophia, thank you so much for hosting me today at Fiction Vixen as part of the Yours to Keep tour! I’m hoping everyone is starting to feel more or less normal again after yesterday’s Thanksgiving excesses? I’m guessing if you’re reading this post today, you’re probably more of a Cyber Monday type than a Black Friday shopper, but either way, we’re in the thick of the winter holidays now.
I didn’t write Yours to Keep originally as a holiday book, but at some point it turned into one. Ana is an undocumented immigrant who has avoided intimacy her whole life for fear of being found out. Ethan wants to love her and isn’t afraid of her secrets. And Thanksgiving and Christmas, it turns out, are the territory on which their conflicts play out.
Yours to Keep is full of holiday joy and celebration—a Thanksgiving Day where families confront danger and ultimately come together, and a Christmas Day where the smallest acts of kindness can begin the process of erasing years of mistrust. Here’s what that Christmas feels like for Ethan and Ana, from a culinary perspective:
The dining-room table had groaned earlier under the combined culinary expectations of two cultures: Cara’s pork, chivo, and tostones, Ethan’s mother’s turkey, gravy, stuffing, and mashed potatoes, and the world’s most absurd cheese plate courtesy of Ethan’s father, who said that Christmas wasn’t Christmas unless you ate Brie until you made yourself sick.
I realized, writing this book, that while food isn’t a cure for all ills—not by a long shot—it is a way for us to understand who we are and how we fit with others. Food gives us pointers to our cultural heritage—but at the same time, it provides common ground for connecting deeply to new cultures and people.
It’s also just a ton of fun to write and read about, and if you’re not too overstuffed from yesterday and not too busy shopping ’til you drop, I invite you to celebrate the holidays and dine with Ethan, Ana, and their families!
Please join the conversation by telling us something about your holiday food traditions. We’d especially love to hear how your family mixes cultural traditions! And don’t forget to enter the Rafflecopter giveaway for a chance to win books and/or a gift card!
Serena Bell makes her Loveswept debut with the captivating story of a woman living on the edge—and the man who’s destined to love her.
Ana Travares has been looking over her shoulder her whole life. Her U.S. visa expired when she was a young girl, and if her secret is discovered, she’ll be forced to return to the Dominican Republic. Ana allowed herself to get close to someone once before—and after he broke her heart, she swore never to make the same mistake again. But when a handsome doctor asks for her assistance, she fantasizes about breaking all her rules.
Even though pediatrician Ethan Hansen is a natural when it comes to little kids, as the single father of a teenage son he just can’t seem to get it right . . . except for the Spanish tutor he’s hired for his son, Theo. Ana has managed to crack Theo’s shell—and he isn’t the only one taken with her. The sexy tutor has fired up Ethan with a potent mix of lust and protectiveness. But as he starts to envision a future with Ana, Ethan is devastated to learn the truth about her citizenship. Somehow he’s got to find a way to help her—and hold on to the woman he’s falling hopelessly in love with.
