I watched Avatar last night and wow! What a great movie. I really had no desire to ever watch that movie, it just didn’t appeal to me even though I’m a fan of Sci-Fi action flicks. My kids had the Avatar Happy Meal action figures and they freaked me out just a little. But the hubs signed us up for Netflix recently and we ended up with Avatar.

I intended to read while hubs watched the movie, I often do that. But I was captivated from the very beginning and needless to say I got no reading done. I’m sure it had nothing whatsoever to do with the fact that Sam Worthington is drop dead sexy. That couldn’t have anything to do with it at all. I don’t know which I like more, looking at him or listening to him. Both, I refuse to pick.

Besides Sam Worthington, the visuals in this movie are simply stunning.

So, I’m reminded just how much I love to watch Sci-Fi and I’ve been inspired to seek out more of the same since I’ve been mostly a reader not a watcher this past year. But the interesting thing is, I don’t read very much Sci-Fi. Almost none in fact. I think because I love the visuals of the movies, and maybe my imagination is just not geared in that direction when reading. Modern Sci-Fi movies pack such an amazing visual punch. As I was considering this while watching Avatar I received a review request for Dying Light, a recently released Sci-Fi Vampire thriller by D. Scott Meek. Perfect timing right? Needless to say I accepted and will have a review coming up.

So, my questions for you today are, do you like Sci-Fi? Do you prefer to read, watch or both? What are your book and movie recommendations?
I like SF, but it needs to be character or plot driven, not overly tech-heavy.
My fave is SL Viehl's STARDOC series… LOVE
Thank you Shiloh, I'll check that series out!
I'm a Star Wars fan. The Expanded Universe is amazing. You do get some flops here and there. But most of it is really good.
I know if I watch Avatar I will like it..but hubs still hasn't forgiven me for not going to the theater when it was in IMAX
You have to read the Jax series by Ann Aguirre. Grimspace – so so good. You will fall in love with March – so sexy and gruff. rawr.
I prefer the movies to the books, but I find myself reading some SF lately. One great sci-fi horror book is I Am Legend by Richard Matheson.
Movie suggestions: Inception, the first 3 (or last 3?) Star Wars, The Matrix (but not the sequels), Alien, A Clockwork Orange (awesome book, as well!), District 9, Donnie Darko, Children of Men (dystopian setting, and I want to read the book!), The Cell, 28 Days Later, Cube, The Butterfly Effect, The Island, Flatliners, Demolition Man, Gattaca…
Not sure if you watch anime, but the Evangelion Neon Genesis series is AMAZING!
I loved Avatar. I saw it 3x in the theater. It was glorious in IMAX 3-D. And yes, Sam Worthingotn is gorgeous! Personally, I was in love with his Avatar more. lol
I love to watch Sci-Fi movies but I prefer paranormal romance or urban fantasy for my reading
I loved Avatar also
Movies: Blade Runner, Aliens, The Island, Underworld, Pitch Black
Books: Dying Light (haha), Stranger in a Strange Land, Hyperion Cantos, Brave New World, Dune
As is said above, I love character-driven stories, which is why you will see that Dying Light is totally character-driven. If you don't love the characters, then you can't love the story they are in. In character-driven stories, the action happens naturally, and so the story is smooth. If you hate to see them go at the end of the book, if it breaks your heart when they die, then the author did his job well.
I have been love with sci-fi since my father sat me and my sisters down to watch Aliens. I love me some sci-fi!!!
I didn't want to see Avatar but I'm glad I did.
I do not read sci-fi nor do I watch sci-fi movies. That is why I didn't want to watch Avatar. And it's also why I'm a bit hesitant to read The Host, even though people say it has a great romance in it.
I love Sci Fi, but have a hard time reading it. One book I loved, though was Touched by An Alien by Gini Koch. It was Lolz funny.
I like to watch, if it's good, and there are some great tvshwos out there.
Book are nice too, but haven't come across many good ones, except for DUne
Some great recommendations from Smash Attack.
I'm also a big fan of sci fi. A couple of my favorite books are ENDER'S GAME and BATTLEFIELD EARTH. Some of my favorite SF movies are Avatar, Alien/Aliens, Dark City, Donnie Darko, and Equilibreum.

Another fan of Mr Cameron's work I see…
I still have not watched it and I think my kids have my name in a little black book somewhere – they Love it….
STARDOC – definately one of my fav Sci-fi book ….
Sandeflay – Linda Mooney, more offworld, but spacey feel to it..
I so get a buzz when I watch a pretty decent sci-fi show. I'll look out for your thoughts on the Meek book – I saw it the other day and thought the cover was pretty good…

Some great Scifi reads are: Titan, Wizard and Demon (The Gaian Trilogy) by John Varley; The Vorkosigan books by Lois McMaster Bujold are also very good (Start with "Cordelia's Honor" which is a compilation of the 1st 2 books).
SciFi movies: "Blade Runner" of course or "The Matrix", but one I really liked that a lot of people haven't seen is "Equilibrium" (Christian Bale, Sean Bean)
I also love S L Viehl's Star Doc series. She also writes paranormal romances as Lynn Viehl. Another favourite of mine is Lisanne Normans Sholan series. She just published a new one after about 6 years.
I was a freshman in high school when I discovered sci-fi. Anne McCaffrey's Pern series. Then I discovered Alan Dean Foster's Flinx/Humanx Commonwealth books. Still two of my fave authors in the genre, although these days I also read some books David Weber, John Ringo and Eric Flint too.
And I do watch sci-fi movies. Loved Avatar and the newest Star Trek movie. Those two and the new Transformer movie are the only ones I saw in the theaters last year. Haven't been to the theaters at all this year.
