“I want every piece of you. Even the stuff I missed without even knowing I was missing it.”
I loved Ellie from On Dublin Street. She is a hopeless romantic, kind, generous, adores her older brother, Braden and was a great best friend to Joss. Until Fountain Bridge gives us a glimpse into the history of Ellie Carmichael and Adam Sutherland dating back to her crush on him at age ten. Ellie has been in love with Adam, Branden’s best friend, since she was fourteen. Using her diary as an outlet for all of her feelings and emotions regarding Adam, Ellie reveals to us throughout years of journaling how her love grows for the man that in her eyes no other man could aspire to be.
“You should know,” I murmured softly, “That it all comes back to you.”
As we witness Ellie’s life as an awkward teenager up to her battle as an adult with a brain tumor, Samantha Young so eloquently bares Ellie’s soul and her innate beauty to the reader through heartfelt moments penned within her diary. Ms. Young also allows us a better understanding of Adam, how deep his love for Braden and Ellie runs and how they were more family to him than any blood relations. Adam was always protective of Ellie throughout her childhood years projecting a big brother “I’ll kill you if you hurt her” role to all of the boys that attempt to date Ellie as well as those that try to bully her at school. We discover that Adam’s feelings significantly change at Ellie’s eighteenth birthday and his eyes open wide to the beautiful, sensual woman that is in front of him. From that point we feel Adam’s torment in his attraction to Ellie and how he believes he cannot reveal or pursue his feelings her for fear that it will destroy his relationship with Braden. Adam is a dirty talker, and we get the full effect of it when he reminisces on his reaction to seeing Ellie at her eighteenth birthday party:
“I’m looking at my best friend’s wee sister who’s just told me she had sex for the first time and I can see her swollen mouth and her bed hair and I’m getting fucking turned on.”
“I suddenly wondered what your lips felt like, how you’d taste, what it would feel like to have your long legs wrapped around my back as I thrust into you…” “Then I got pissed off. At myself for feeling that way about you. And then at the guy for having tasted you. And then at you…for letting him taste you.”
We also learn that reputable Ellie gets very turned on with Adam’s filthy mouth:
“I’m the only one who knows sweet ‘butter wouldn’t melt in her mouth’ Ellie Carmichael likes it when I talk dirty.”
Filled with emotion, humor, heartbreak and ultimately a beautifully scripted love story, Ellie and Adam’s history comes to life. Fans of Ellie and Adam will fall deeper in love with this couple after reliving their journey in finding forever with each other in Until Fountain Bridge.
“It’s painful to read how my stupidity hurt you at the time, but I like being inside your head. I like knowing that while I was struggling with the fact that I had fallen in love with my best friend’s little sister, she loved me back more than I could ever hope to deserve”
