I’m the Spider, bitch—I’m the best there is.”
Finally!! The one with the final showdown where Mab Monroe gets what’s coming to her. We know this going in because of the title, so that’s no big spoiler. As a fan of this series, I have been waiting for what seems like forever for Gin to take Mab down once and for all. The feud (that’s putting it mildly) has been brewing for years and as Gin has slowly uncovered the secrets from her past, the tension has grown. It’s been a very personal journey for Gin and so my hope was that the final showdown would be up close and personal.
Jennifer Estep did not disappoint in Gin’s revenge against Mab. I don’t want to spoil, so I’ll just say that although elemental magic was a big part of the showdown, it was still very personal and up-close which for me as a fan of this series, was very important. This was not just a job for Gin, this was the culmination of a lifetime of pain at the hands of Mab Monroe and Gin’s final revenge needed to personal. While we see Gin’s family and loved ones rally for her, it’s just Gin and Mab who finally face off.
Throughout the series we’ve seen different sides of Gin. The Spider who is bad-ass and kills people—she gets the job done efficiently. Then Gin Blanco, restaurant owner with a softer side who loves her family fiercely and is loyal to a fault. Also Genevieve Snow, the thirteen year old elemental who was witness to her family’s murder, and taken in by kindly gentleman who then trained her as an assassin. We’ve seen her vulnerabilities, but as the Spider she’s been tough and unwavering. But this time, in the hours before the showdown we see all three sides of Gin blended as her journey has come full circle and she faces Mab in what could be her final fight. I was a little sad to think of the Spider as vulnerable or Gin facing Mab as anything less that a stone-cold assassin bent on revenge but her identities come together and make Gin exactly what she needs to be to finally end Mab and avenge her sister and mother.
We see some deepening romance in this installment of the Elemental Assassin series. Gin and Owen grow even closer amidst the chaos that surrounds them and romance readers will be happy with the way things are going for them. Love is also in the air for Finn and Bria as their relationship is moving right along as well. The author has said that Finn will get his romance and I’m curious to see if he will get his own book or novella or if we will continue to see it played out in as a secondary romance within the E A series.
The secondary characters are always an important part of the story in this series because they are Gin’s “family” and pretty much everything she does, she does to protect them. They are a rag-tag team, but they love each other and their loyalty to each other knows no bounds. We see Gin and Bria’s relationship growing and as they become closer as sisters after years of separation, and they work together to kill Mab. We also learn a little bit of background information on Sophia one of the drawf sisters who is close to Gin. She rarely speaks, preferring to communicate with umphs, and grunts but it turns out there is more to her than meets the eye. I enjoyed learning more about Sophia and wonder if we’ll see more from her and her sister Jo Jo at some point.
Although this story arc with Mab concludes with this book, this is not the end for Gin. We’re left with possibilities and maybe a loose end or two and ample opportunities for Gin to kick ass the way only she knows how. Spider’s Revenge is my favorite book in this series. I may have said that about other books in the series in the past but I think this series continues to get better and better.
[…]—I will destroy you. No matter how long it takes, no matter what it costs me. I won’t sleep, I won’t eat. I won’t do anything but plot your downfall. I will mow down your men like they’re weeds. I’ll kill so many of them so viciously, so brutally, so horribly that no one will dare to work for you. And sooner or later, I’ll get you too.
