Adam and Eliza’s story has been a long time building and I was looking forward to it. Adam is head of the GIM and cursed to feel nothing until he finds the other half of his soul. He will know immediately who that person is and when he is offered Eliza’s soul by Mary and Daisy he takes her. He doesn’t make her into a GIM like normal but binds her spirit to him with golden chains.
Over time Eliza becomes resentful toward Adam and stops talking to him. Adam turns into an ass and the two of them spend all their time together, unhappy and surly. Eliza only wanted to live and didn’t know the consequences for accepting Adam’s bargain, Adam only wanted his soulmate so he could feel again. Eliza is finally able to escape Adam when her very powerful fae aunt Mab leaches Adam’s power and frees her.
Eliza lives in constant turmoil over Adam finding her until the day she is shocked to see him chained in her aunt’s basement. He does not look good and isn’t healing like he used to due to Mab taking his power. The man Eliza has spent her life running from has turned up and claims to be Mab’s brother and has plans to marry her so suddenly Adam is the lesser of the evils in Eliza’s life. She agrees to free him if he will help her. Just when Eliza thinks things might work out Mab’s evil brother steps in and threatens her. He knows what she is up to and if she doesn’t kill Adam when she is done with him she will pay the price.
First things first, Eliza frees Adam but he is still very weak and helpless. The situation is a complete turn around from what he is used to and we see a different side of Adam. He has always been the cocky, arrogant arse in these books. Now he has to rely on his GIM children and Eliza to help him. He has been brought low by Mab and in order to survive Adam has to show what is really inside of him. All he has ever wanted was the other half of his soul and the person who would let him feel again. He doesn’t care if Eliza believes what is telling her but if he can convince her to just give him a shot, he will feel like he has a chance to live again.
Nothing is ever easy with the Darkest London series and Eliza and Adam have to face several major obstacles before they get to the endgame. Mab must be dealt with, her very powerful brother must be thwarted and Adam curse needs to be broken. Not to mention everyone must deal with the very sad unintended consequence of all the GIM losing power along with their maker. Several beloved previous characters are struck low along with Adam.
Overall, Ms. Callihan has given us another winner in this series. The Darkest London series has been strong since book one, my favorite, and hasn’t let up. Adam has been a favorite of mine and while his know-it-all behavior is still on display here, he also shows softer more vulnerable side the reader will love. Mab is a villain we are intimate with and this is the book we finally see resolution with her character. This is book six in the series and I would not suggest reading them out of order. In order to get the full picture and the full understanding of this couple, the first five books should be read in order.
Ms. Callihan has also set the series up for who will be next. His story promises to be intriguing and I can’t wait for it! There is also one very interesting character who makes and appearance her and can’t help but hope- wonder if he will have a story of his own too. Final grade- B
He glanced up then, forcing himself to meet her eyes. “But Eliza May, your champion, I am. Upon the souls of the only ones that mean anything to me, my children, the ghosts in the machine, I swear, while there is breath left in my body, I will protect you.”
