My first thought when I finished this delightful historical romance was “why haven’t I read author before?”. I mean really, why haven’t I? My second thought was “where can I find this author’s backlist?”. Romancing Lady Stone was such a well written novella. Full of humor, some seriously hot sexy times and two thoroughly likable main characters. This novella had it all.
From the moment she and that expensive perfume of hers had nestled into his lap hours earlier, he had a strange, glimmering feeling they were going to imprint their breaths on each other. He couldn’t explain it, but he felt very protective of her. Like she was already his.
Lady Cecelia Stone is in Russia to stop her 21-year-old son from making a huge mistake. She must get to him before he marries an actress 20 years his senior. On her way to St. Petersburg she wakes up in on the shoulder of a handsome young stranger while riding in a rented coach. Her paid companion is missing, but then so is her money and all of her clothes. She vaguely remembers being given a drink, then nothing else. But she has destiny on her side and the sexy man offers to share his room and make sure she gets safely to her son. Having been widowed seven years prior, Lady Stone has lived her life solely for her children, following the rules of the ton and always doing the right thing. That is until she starts to wonder what it would be like to take a lover and experience all the things she’s always wanted.
Konstantin Levin wants to change his life. Following in his father’s footsteps into a life of crime has left him nothing of importance. No wife, no children and no respectability. The only thing he has left of his father is an old pocket watch, a story of true love and the belief that destiny and magic can make things happen. When he saves the life of an important, well-loved man he is rewarded richly and now must get to London to collect his reward and hopefully start a new life. On the way he rescues a beautiful English woman and now is trying to be that better man and keep his hands off her.
She wanted to faint from want.
His hand left her hip and skimmed down her arm. “Do you have a lover back in London?”
This conversation had officially turned wild. “No, I have never taken a lover.”
He hesitated, then leaned in and brushed her hair away from her neck. “Something tells me you are about to.”
The chemistry between Cecelia and Konstantin jumped off the page right from the beginning. There is an age difference between the two, she is 40 and he is about 30 years old, but to be honest this is what made this story so absolutely captivating. I adored the way he looked at her and saw nothing but beauty. Even as he watches her and sees her stretch marks and signs of a well lived life he is entranced and acknowledges that those are the things that make her who she is. Their passion is so rich, and there is something to be said for a mature woman reaching out and grabbing hold of what she wants. Cecelia married for money and security, but she’s never known any kind of closeness with a man in her life. Konstantin tries so hard to stay apart, offering to sleep in the chair and give her some privacy while at the inn, but eventually they come together as lovers, and when they do it is smoking hot.
No proper romance is without some angst, and of course such a respectable lady would have doubts about starting a relationship with a much younger man. Especially when she has children about to make a come out in society. They part ways, still wanting each other, but not sure how they can make it work. But remember destiny is at play, so of course they are bound to find each other again. Their reconciliation scene was wonderfully romantic and so very sexy. Oh wow, what a sexy scene. Konstantin and Cecelia meet halfway, him becoming more respectable for her and her willing to take a chance and accept something beautiful in her life.
This was such an easy, enjoyable read. I will absolutely be looking into this author’s backlist and can’t wait to dive into the rest of the School of Gallantry series. Final Grade- B+
Dragging both hands tightly up her legs, he heatedly pounded into her, banging them and the bed hard, into the wall.
It wasn’t the sort of sex she’d ever had with her husband.
