Rescue My Heart is the third book in Jill Shalvis’ Animal Magnetism series and finally we get to read about Adam. Usually when I read a trilogy there is one couple that is more anticipated than the others and for me and this series it was Adam. Holly and Adam have a past and that makes it even better for me. I love reading two characters that are familiar with each other but have obstacles to get around. And honestly, I love reading Jill Shalvis. Win, win.
When Holly’s dad goes missing she knows there is only one person she can turn to for help. That person happens to be Adam, her first love, and the man that left her so many years ago. She knows it will be difficult to be around him but concern for her father outweighs everything else.
After leaving the military Adam came home to work at the animal shelter he owns with his brothers. He suffers from PTSD and has spent months trying to become normal again. Well as close to normal as he can be. He works with search and rescue but always as an instructor, never the one to do the actual rescue. When Holly approaches him he is fresh from his first rescue, one that happened by accident. He is tired and beat up but still agrees to look for Holly’s dad.
Adam has every intention of looking alone but Holly will not let him. Adam knows that if Holly comes along all kinds of old feelings will be stirred up but he also knows there isn’t really a way to stop her from following him. Adam was a troubled teen and after a tragedy he chose to leave Holly to join the military. He didn’t tell Holly it was a choice though. He told her the judge was making him go. He knew that if he didn’t make it seem as if he was forced Holly would never let him go and he needed to go. For himself and for everyone else. Now, with Holly along for the S&R he is confronted by those leftover feelings, something he doesn’t think is good for either of them.
Holly was hopes and dreams. She was…forever. Adam no longer had hopes and dreams; he was working on just getting through the moment. And forever? Forever was a f-word.
It doesn’t take long in to the S&R before Adam and Holly are at each other and I don’t mean in a fighting way. Well maybe a fighting way without clothes on. The next morning Adam attempts to give Holly the morning after speech but she stops him. She has always known the deal with Adam and it seems things have not changed. He is just as closed off as he has always been.
Eventually, Adam and Holly find her dad and they return to town. From there the story deals with Holly trying to win over Adam. She has to do anything and everything to show him they can work.
Rescue My Heart is a fun, sexy book by Ms Shalvis. Individually I really liked both Adam and Holly. As a couple, it took me a bit to warm up to them. I am more of a fan of the man buying into a relationship sooner than what Adam did. After a while it worked for me though. Adam has/had severe PTSD and he needed to be shown that him and Holly can be good together. Holly needed to to pursue him to help heal him and Adam needed to be pursued to work through his fears. I really liked that Holly didn’t give up on Adam. Even the point where she found out that Adam left her voluntarily she didn’t go all drama mama on him. She understood that his decision was the best for him based upon where his life was headed.
As with all of Ms. Shalvis books’ the characters are engaging, the dialogue is often humorous, the sex is hot and the story has some poignant moments. Each time I pick up one of her books I know I am going to have a wonderful couple of hours reading and then a moment of sadness when I realize the book is all gone. Now I will just sit and tap my fingers waiting for the next book Ms. Shalvis graces us with. Final grade- B+
I must mention that I loved the mention of the dog called Frat Boy. It made me lol.
She wanted to concentrate on his words, but his mouth was giving her an entire body shiver.
“Don’t,” she whispered, clutching at him so he couldn’t escape. She closed her eyes. “Don’t toy with me.”
Above her, he went still. “Is that what you think I’m doing?” His breath was warm against her skin, and he dipped to taste, stirring up all kinds of fire within her. He met her gaze, his own dark and heated as he slid a hand down her leg, pulling it up, around his hip, which grinded into her. He was hard. His mouth was warm, firm….perfect.
“Does that feel like I’m playing a game, Holly?”
