From the blurb:
Detective Tom Hanson has a string of grotesquely mutilated bodies on his hands and no answers—aside from the fact that the victims were members of an underground sex club catering to singular erotic tastes. Tastes the long, lean detective has sampled himself in the arms of his former lover, a fiery redhead who offered the most erotic, irresistible sex he’d ever encountered. Until the night she’d begged for the one thing he couldn’t give, and he lost her forever.
Gina Larsen is the only one who can guide Hanson through the fringe world of dark fantasy and desire that lies hidden deep beneath the Bible Belt. Lured into her lair by a quest for justice, Hanson discovers his hunger for Gina has only grown stronger and deeper…beyond the edge of control. Soon he’s shedding his last inhibitions in the search for answers, but the more she draws him into her erotic web, the less he can distinguish between passion and duty, pleasure and pain…good and evil.
Erotica has become almost mainstream these days with the popularity of 50 Shades and other recently released books. So when I see these types of books I usually grab them up for review. Red looked like it was going to one of those just from reading the back of the book. However, I knew from the opening scene it was going to be a bit darker, nastier and harsher than what I have been reading.
The opening scene takes place in a “glory hole”. It is disturbing, dark and not something I can come close to relating to. I almost put the book down and walked away.
What I did make it through follows a pair of detectives as they investigate some nasty killings. The killings have left people severly beaten and bloody and are traced back to a certain club. From what I could gather one of the detectives had formerly been involved in the lifestyle but was in over his head and left. I did not make it far enough into the book to find out his reasons for leaving.
I would recommend this book for people who are into reading about the more pain filled aspect of sex without much emotion attached to it. Because I am not as knowledgeable about sadomasichism, I am not sure how someone who is knowledgable would really feel about the book. All I can tell you is that there was no erotic twist like I am used to reading in most of the newly released books.

I was actually looking very forward to this read – I had no idea how intense it would be. Still planning on giving it try, although I’m not into sadomasochism either, I’ll just read lightly.
Thanks for prepping me!
Jenna Lynne – I read and reviewed this one too. If you want another opinion on it. I do agree with Jen though, it is definitely harsh and parts are definitely horrifying! Not what I was expecting at all.
Not what I was expecting either. A little out of the norm!
I hope you enjoy it. You will have to come back and let me know what you think.
The blurb SO appeals to me..but then a trusted blogger said it ends not really as a romance..and then I’ve heard others didn’t like it. After this review…will pass. I do like them dark..but I don’t think this one is for me.
That is exactly why I wanted to read it. It sounded appealing but it ended up a bit too much for me.
I saw that Jane had finished it when I was posting my review on GR. I was a little glad to see I hadn’t missed too much.
Oh, I didn’t make it through to glory hole scene. This book made me SO uncomfortable. Not push your boundaries uncomfortable, like say, a Megan Hart book does, but push my boundaries like, “No way am I even finishing this scene. BLECH!”. I can’t handle that level of dirty in my books. If that makes me a priss, so be it.
That was a bit of a shock, huh? I can do uncomfortable if I like the flow but some of those early scenes didn’t go with the flow. For me, anyway.
I recently read Trust In Me by Skye Warren and it was much darker than anything I’ve read. Many of the sex scenes were well beyond my boundaries but they were appropriate for the story. I’ve been cautiously on the lookout for more dark erotics, but from the reviews I’ve read of this one, I think I’m going to pass.
Like you, I have been trying to find those darker erotic book. I feel like I should have liked this one but it was just too much.
Sitting on my kindle right now is Captive in the Dark (The Dark Duet #1) by CJ Roberts. I am anxious to start it.
Oh that one looks dark. Let me know how you like it.
