“You were always the one.”
Fans of Larissa Ione’s Demonica and Lords of Deliverance series have waited a long time for this story so I will start by saying Reaver is not a standalone book. You will miss a significant amount of the storyline and the arc of events leading up to Reaver’s story. With that being said, let’s get down to the nitty-gritty.
Reaver, fallen angel and father to the Four Horsemen, has a lot of unresolved baggage in his life. His volatile relationship with Harvester, a fallen angel and former Watcher of the Horseman would be the current plight at hand. To say these two have a history together would be the understatement of the year. The problem is both Reaver and Harvester have little memory of their past. Regardless, there is a connection and chemistry they both share that began thousands of years ago.
As a result of Harvester betraying Satan and halting the Apocalypse, she is now stuck in Hell enduring daddy’s torture. Reaver, being the persistent bad boy decides to cash in all his bravery and take a possible one way ticket to Hell in order to rescue Harvester. Now that he knows the truth to her mission, he is determined to bring her out alive and once Reaver sets his mind to a task, there is little to stop him.
“You’re a pure, holy angel of goodness, and I’m Satan’s evil whore of a daughter. So yeah, we can’t work. Thanks for pointing that out, Captain Obvious. But we can fuck.”
Harvester is beyond shocked when Reaver arrives to rescue her. Their relationship of late has been less than harmonious so she is both leery and relieved to see him. Her guard is up but as they venture through a war of demons and darkness to make their way out of Satan’s den, the memories of their past slowly begin to surface giving way to new feelings and emotions that develop for both. While they have maintained a flirty, snarky, evil “oil and water” union for years, there is a deeper bond they share and it is returning to both of their memories and hearts.
“He combed through her hair with his fingers, a silly gesture that was somehow more intimate than anything they’d just done. Tingling warmth washed over her, and her stupid heart did a fluttery little jig. This was that sappy, cuddly moment all the romance books and girl magazines waxed on about, wasn’t it? Not that she read those things, but one couldn’t avoid the chatter from women with overactive ovaries.”
You can always count on Larrisa Ione to deliver all the elements of an amazingly crafted paranormal romance. Once again the reader experiences heart racing action, gritty darkness, snark, humor and intoxicating sexual chemistry weaved into a rich and multidimensional PNR world. I will tell you straight up that Ione’s vivid description of Sheoul aka Hell alone will have you selling your soul to not endure it. Croix vipers, Silas demons, bear toads, dragon biters, forests of pain feeding monsters, rivers of lava and bubbling acid, Satan’s torture complex. Yeah, it’s graphic and evil to the highest extent. Reaver and Harvester have less sexy times together as compared to prior couples, but the suspenseful action keeps the reader engaged and on edge witnessing the outcome of this long awaited story. Centering the story with good vs. evil, Ms. Ione uses the two extremely flawed characters of Reaver and Harvester to create and emotional journey of compassion, forgiveness, love, resolution and redemption. While much is revealed and many probing questions answered regarding the arc of the series, little can be stated without spoiling the outcome for the reader. As always prior characters from both series have a place within the storyline so fans are able to revisit many of their favorites.
Any reader that enjoys PNR should be reading The Demonica and Lords of Deliverance series. Larissa Ione captures every element to gift her readers with a heart stopping escape that leaves you excited and breathless for more.
“I hope the warg’s okay. He’s my drinking buddy. Plus, he’s supposed to introduce me to his sister. She’s a porn star. Fucking cool.”
