At the end of Perfect Fit, Erin the town good girl and Mike’s sister does the unthinkable and has a one night stand with Cole Sanders. Cole is back from a long undercover job and wanted to come back for some rest and to reconnect with his hometown. Coming from being someone else for so long is difficult because you lose your sense of self and Cole wants something familiar to help him recover his identity.
That something familiar comes in the form of Erin, someone he has always had chemistry with but avoided because he is not the type of man she needs. The town has no idea he is an undercover cop and thinks of him only as the bad boy he was when he left. Nobody will think he is good enough for her and that is why what they have must be kept to a one time thing.
But their one night stand turns into something more when three months later Erin realizes she is pregnant. She has no idea what to do because the couple of times she has tried to talk to Cole again he has given her the brush off. He hasn’t been rude but he has made it clear that he doesn’t want a repeat performance. Things all change though when Erin is shot in the arm and Cole overhears one of the ER doctors talking about the pregnancy. Now Cole is Erin’s bodyguard until they can figure out who shot her and why. Bodyguard duty involves Cole living with Erin and them being together all the time which is pretty stressful for this couple because of the explosive passion they have been trying to avoid.
As the days go by Erin thinks it would be a great idea for them to be out as a couple. She will start showing soon and everyone will know anyway so why not give it a shot? Cole really wants to be with her so he agrees but as things become more stressful he realizes he is leading her on and calls things off. Both Erin and Cole want each other but with Cole soon returning to undercover life there is just no future for them.
Carly Phillips writes some of the best easy-going, fun to read stories. Her characters are always a little stubborn but very likable. They have their quirks but not in a bad way, more in an identifiable way. Erin handles the situation the best she can. When Cole pulls away I was very happy to see her try to move on with her life. She kind of gives him the cold shoulder and Cole doesn’t like it. Considering he was the one to pull back I felt like he was just getting what he deserved.
Of course, that isn’t how things end up. This is a romance after all! Perfect Fling was an entertaining read. Ms. Phillips stories all pull me in right from the beginning and keep me involved until the last page. I can always count on her to give me a satisfying story with all the elements I require; a sexy man, competent woman, good lovin’ and an engaging conflict. Perfect Fling doesn’t disappoint in any of those elements and would make a great summer read! Final grade- B
“I love you, Erin. It’s that complicated…..and that simple.”
