Review: Natural Evil by Thea Harrison

Natural Evil - Thea HarrionNatural Evil by Thea Harrison is a novella in the Elder Races series.  There is no connection to previous Elder Races books other than Luis is a Wyr.

Claudia is on a permanent vacation.  After retiring from the Special Forces several years ago she has taken to wandering the country on her own.  For some reason she is compelled to stop and rescue the large beat up dog she passes along the road.  She convinces a sheriff to take her to the nearest vet to treat the dog.  Of course, she is not convince he is really just a dog but time will tell.  He has a lot of injuries that need to heal before they determine if he is anything else.

The story moves pretty quickly.  For about the first 30% we read about Claudia finding the dog and getting settled in at the vet.  There is a moment of humor when Claudia decided she is going to call the dog Precious.  This causes the dog to react in a human like way confirming that he is Wyr.  Jackson, the vet, is able to get his hands on a healing potion that allow Luis to shift back into a man.  When back as a man he is able to tell Claudia why he was beaten and left for dead.  Claudia lends her valuable Special Forces skills to help close the case Luis was working on.

The major conflict is over 2/3 of the way in the book.  The time that is left focuses on their relationship.  There was some over-emphasis on the age difference between the two of them, Claudia being 40 and Luis 27.  I felt that was mentioned a couple too many times.  Because it is an Elder Forces and Wyr book there is discussion of a mating but I will let the reader find out how that goes down!

Overall, a the book was just a short look into the Elder Races.  I found it to be ok but lacking in the normal humor of the longer novels.  It should tide the reader over until the next full length book though.  Final grade – C

Then one corner of her beautiful mouth lifted.  She said, “Boy howdy, Precious, you really are one big son of a bitch.”

Took a bit for me to get into the series, but now I love it. Didn’t know about this though – thanks!

I’m still staring at Oracle’s Moon. I will read it, I will. I think I’m going to pass on this novella though. Thanks for the review Jen!

I haven’t been able to pick up Oracle’s Moon either. Rune and Carling’s story was so disappointing for me that I can’t get back on track.

I still have Oracle’s Moon to read first, but by then I hope to have the novella. I really liked the previous books, in my opinion, each book gets better.

This was pretty stand alone so you don’t have to wait until you read Oracle’s Moon if you didn’t want to.
