Midnight Frost starts out with a fantastic action scene as the Reapers make an attempt on Gwen’s life by trying to poison her…in the library. Gwen should just stay away from the library because all the major catastrophes take place in the library! It’s a dangerous place. But this time, the story actually takes place beyond the halls of Mythos Academy. Gwen’s loyalty comes through as she and her friends hit the road in search of antidote to a poison that was meant to kill her but instead made its way to someone she loves. Time is of the essence as she and her friends search for the antidote that will save a life.
Jennifer Estep’s book don’t tend skimp on the action. However after the heart stopping action in Crimson Frost, I expected things had to level out a bit. This time we don’t see as many fight scenes, but more of an emotional journey for Gwen. This is Gwen’s series and I like that we are seeing her character grow and move forward with each installment. She’s always been a very likable character but as the series continues to gain momentum, Gwen is blossoming into the kind of a smart, well-rounded heroine I want to read about and that makes this series stand out in the young adult genre. Although Gwen was dealt a huge emotional (and physical) blow in the previous book, she handles her grief with grace.
This is not necessarily a series that keeps me on the edge of my seat as far as not knowing what is going to happen next. But it’s a fun series, with great fight scenes, a little romance and it features a group of characters that have absolutely captured my heart. I say “a little romance” because I’ve complained about the pace of Gwen and Logan’s romance in the past. It’s slow. But I’ve come to terms with that…I guess. 🙂 Good, strong loyalty among friends always appeals to me and Gwen and her core group have it. While Midnight Frost was not as physically action-packed as some of the previous books, I wasn’t disappointed at all. There is still plenty of action and yes, Vic gets some good page time. This was a chance to see our heroine grow emotionally and I’m excited to see what’s next for the Mythos Academy gang.
