Merrick’s Destiny is a novella that takes place between Wilder’s Mate and Hunter’s Prey in Moira Rogers’s Bloodhound series. You can read this as a stand alone story, but be sure to read the blurb for a better understanding of the world.
Merrick is a Bloodhound, created by the Guild to hunt down and kill vampires that have taken over America’s frontier. He is a wild man in every sense of the word. He’s a killer. With each new moon he (and other Bloodhounds) experience three days of sexual hunger that can drive him to madness. He wakes up among the wreckage of the airship he was a passenger on with the pilot straddling his hips trying to revive him, and he immediately recognizes her as his mate although he has no recollection of the events leading up to his taking her as a mate. Having crashed behind enemy lines he must get his mate to safety before the new moon.
Paralee is a pilot of an airship that has been shot down by vampires and one of only two survivors of the crash. Determined to revive Merrick before the vampires come looking for them, she can’t help be a little attracted to the dangerous, but attractive Bloodhound. She might be up for a little slap and tickle if Merrick is, and he obviously is, but she’s not fully aware of what that could mean for her and her future. Bloodhounds mate for life and cannot survive without their mate once mated.
Merrick’s Destiny is a steampunk romance with emphasis on the romance…and sexy times. The hero is gruff, growly and created for the sole purpose of killing the enemy. But for whatever reason, Bloodhounds mate and now that he has found his mate, his gentler side emerges. He’s still a cold blooded killer, especially when it comes to protecting his mate, but he is careful not to cross the line into coercion when enticing her into his bed and into becoming a part of his life forever.
Merrick braced his hands on either side of her head and watched her, every scrap of humanity stripped from his expression. “Can I have you?”
What I really liked about Paralee is how open and emotionally sure-footed she is. She’s tough, and independent faces life head-on. She finds herself stranded in the middle of the Badlands with a Bloodhound who claims she is his mate. Although she doesn’t fully grasp what that means, she’s open to finding out and facing what ever lies ahead for her. And when it comes to protecting her mate, there is no hesitation.
This is one of Moira Rogers’s steamier series and so you can look forward to some very hot, sexy reading in this novella. I liked that there was no shortage on the romance or action scenes either. The only thing I would have wished for is more in the way of setting. Since there are steampunk elements, I wish I had more of a feeling for the setting while reading. But overall, I think this was a nicely rounded story.
He snorted. “Virgins aren’t nearly as fun as women who know what they like and ain’t afraid to ask for it.”
