After she infiltrated his business and betrayed his trust, a disavowed CIA agent must seek sanctuary in the bedroom of a man who will either help her, kill her, or bring her to her knees .
Becca is in trouble and the one man who can help her is the one she betrayed. Everyone on her CIA team has been killed or is hurt and she needs to find out who is behind it. The one person she can turn to is Jarrett Holt, the man she fell for and then betrayed by turning him over to her bosses. She always felt like the operation she was working on was a set up and when she tried to pull the plug things didn’t go as she planned. Jarrett was clearly not the bad guy the CIA made him out to be but it was too late for their relationship when he found out she was the one to double cross him.
Months later and she needs his help to survive. He runs a club that has the security and computer access to help her find out who is trying to have agents killed. The only way to get back in is to turn herself over to the mercy of Jarrett in return for his help. Jarrett wants one thing from Becca, sex, and that is the way he needs to keep it. Falling for her again would be the worst thing to do but he doesn’t know if he can keep himself from doing it.
Despite everything and regardless of the passage of time and the festering anger, he loved her. Right down to the dark lonely place in his soul. And it fucking sucked.
For some reason I was under the impression that HelenKay Dimon was on the lighter side when it came to sex in her books and I don’t know where I got that idea. This is the second book of hers that I have read and there was nothing lighter about the sexiness. It is super steamy and quite frequent. Becca and Jarrett are dirty bunnies and they sure like to have sex. Maybe it is because of their forced time apart or maybe they are just animals but boy do they go at it a lot. It isn’t too much for the plot though because about half of it is done off page or just referred to. The actual amount of sex and page it occupies fits well with the storyline.
There is also another relationship going on within the main story arc. Becca’s teammate, Elijah, also sought sanctuary from Jarrett and started out staying a room close to Jarrett’s second in command, Wade. Like Becca, Elijah is an assassin and we never quite know where he stands when it comes to good or evil. He does manage to worm his way into Wade’s bed and there is a yummy m/m secondary romance going on throughout the book. Eli makes a boneheaded move toward the end of the book and messes up the relationship but the reader is given the feeling that things aren’t quite over with this couple.
There is another relationship that could be in the works also. Wade’s sister has come to work for Jarrett and Jarrett’s lawyer friend is in the picture. They haven’t actually clashed yet but I feel like they could be a good match if they were to pair up. I haven’t seen anything to say whether this will be a series and we will get these other stories but the way the setup up worked, it felt like things could easily be continued. I enjoyed both the suspense and romance here, though the romance was much stronger, so I would be happy to pick up another book should it happen.
Even if another book doesn’t happen, this one is a fun standalone. It is sexy and makes you keep reading to find out how Jarrett will try to save the day and if Becca will be able to control those crazy assassin urges she seems to have all the time. The initial lack of trust with the couple also had me rooting for them to figure things out. The chemistry and love were there, they just had to find their way back to it. Romantic suspense fans should give this one a try. I think you won’t be disappointed. Final grade- B
Jarrett still wasn’t sure what had happened. Somehow they talked about sex and he declared his love for Becca, in between offhanded references to national security breaches. It was the damn oddest fifteen minutes of his life.
