Blurb from Goodreads:
I’d do anything to keep my mother alive.
Anything, including ask Ian Kerr for help. I don’t know much about him, except that he has more money than some small countries. And he’s willing to spend it on me. Just one catch: there’s a string attached, and not just the one I feel pulling me into his arms and his bed. There’s also the plan for revenge he wants my help with.
Every time he says my name, it makes my body shiver and my heart stutter. I know he’s going to wreck me, know there won’t be anything left of me but lust and sensation by the time he’s done with me, but even though I can see the heartbreak coming towards me like a train, ready to crash into me, I can’t get out of the way. I want what he makes me feel. Want what he’s offering.
This may have started out as something to save my mother, but now…now it’s about what he makes me feel. I’m in danger of losing everything that’s important. Worse? Ian’s whispered words and hot caresses are making me believe that’s okay.
I’m not usually a huge fan of the billionaire who rescues the down on her luck girl, sweeps her off her feet and takes over her life trope, but…. this blurb intrigued me. I was even more intrigued when I found out that Ms. Frederick was releasing this story for free a chapter at a time in a daily newsletter, with the whole to be released soon after for the bargain price of $2.99. So in I went, deep into the heart of alpha billionaireland.
Victoria “Tiny” Corrielli has been the sole caregiver for her sick mother since the cancer diagnosis that devastated them both. Now it seems that their battle isn’t over and her mother’s cancer is back. Tiny will do anything for her mother. As a bike messenger she barely makes ends meet as it is, but now she has to figure out a way to get them out of the fifth floor, one bedroom apartment they currently reside in and into something that will be easier for her mother to navigate. Unfortunately her severe dyslexia doesn’t allow for many options, so she does the only thing she can and starts taking jobs from her step-brother delivering less than legal packages around town.
The first time she runs into Ian Kerr it’s on a delivery for her regular day job. They have an immediate chemistry, but Tiny thinks that this man couldn’t possibly want anything to do with someone like her, so she puts the chance meeting out of her mind. The second time they meet is when she is delivering a package for her step brother. Tiny knows the kinds of disreputable people who Malcolm deals with and she’s kind of disappointed that this breathtakingly sexy man might be one of them.
Ian Kerr has a plan for revenge and needs the perfect girl to be able to get it. When he first sees Tiny he wants her in his bed and thoughts of using her in his big revenge plan are put aside. But her need for enough money to take care of her ailing mother finally convinces him to use her in his plot. As he brings her into his life, their passion heats up and both start to fall in love.
I’ve only read one other Jen Frederick book and it had a completely different feel from this one. Ian and Tiny have an explosive passion that heats up the pages and neither are afraid to get down and dirty rather quickly with each other. Ian is the quintessential billionaire alpha man. He literally takes over Tiny’s life one page at a time. First by offering her a job, then by taking over every other part of her life from the medical bills, to buying her new clothes, to not even asking before moving her and her mother to a completely new apartment. I think it’s something in my personality, but every time he did something without consulting her I was a bit indignant, wondering what would happen to her if he suddenly decided that he didn’t want her anymore. I know, I know… this is fiction. I get that. I still couldn’t help but have these thoughts as Ian changes Tiny’s life over and over.
While I did enjoy Tiny and Ian’s story, there were times it was hard for me to connect to them as a couple. Ian explains his backstory in one chapter and alludes to the fact that he tends to make his mind up about things rather quickly. Just like the first time he saw her and knew he had to have her. I guess even with that explanation I was still left wondering exactly what Ian saw in Tiny that led him to pursue her so vigorously. After finishing I still feel like I don’t really know Ian or what his motivations were. Tiny is easier to understand because this book is told in her POV and all of her thoughts and feelings are right there on the page.
The only other issue I had was the revenge plot and how undeveloped it remained even at the end. It really didn’t go anywhere and leaves off with a to be continued feeling. Will I be reading the next book? Probably. Ok, yes, I will be picking it up. I want to know how this couple navigates their newfound relationship and just what will happen to the bad guy in the end. This was a very sexy story and while it didn’t quite hit all my buttons, I do think fans of this trope will be delighted. Final Grade- C
“Your body is so beautiful,” he whispers. “There will never be enough time in this life for me to do everything. I won’t be done until I kill every inch. Until I’ve touched every hollow and rise. All the public places and the secret spots. And then I want to do it all over again.”
