Kane is the second book in the Black Cougar series and the first book I’ve read by Eliza Gayle. Although I did manage to keep up, I really wish I would have read Lucas, the previous book before reading this one. There is back story that would have been helpful to know before jumping into this book.
Kane, a were-cougar, is a Guardian for his clan. He is on a mission to carry out a death order on a witch who has a vendetta and has tried to kill members of the were-cougar clan. It’s personal for him since his own brother was targeted by her. The problem is, Kane feels a strong physical attraction to this witch and it’s getting in the way of his duty to the clan.
Lara is dead set on getting revenge on the were-cougar clan responsible for killing her mother. Nothing will stand in her way and she’ll do anything to avenge her mother’s death. She knows she’s got a death warrant on her head and she’s being hunted by Kane so she sets a trap for the guardian and he walks right into it. She gets more than she bargained for in Kane and her physical attraction to him proves to be quite a problem for her as well.
When Lara reveals her motives for revenge on Kane’s clan, Kane realizes her story could be true and she may have rights within clan law if the death of her mother was unjustified at the hands of clan members. He convinces her she must return with him to present her case to the clan council and seek justice. This forces them to spend time together without killing each other, and deal with their attraction, and in the process learn to trust each other as their relationship goes from enemies to something much more.
Lara is portrayed as a woman who will go to any lengths for revenge. But when the pheromones start flying around the place she quickly gives into her desires and gets down and dirty with the enemy which is fine, it makes for some nice erotic scenes. But for someone who was hell bent on revenge, she seemed to let down her guard with Kane rather quickly, agreeing to accompany him back to the clan to stand before the council. I liked Lara’s solid confidence but her willingness to trust her enemy seemed rushed. Kane is full of aggressive alpha power and struggles to balance his desire for Lara, his duty and loyalty to his clan and his eventual need to protect Lara from those he once trusted. Again, I was confused at how quickly he came around to trusting Lara though.
I had a small problem was with the conclusion of the story. I don’t want to give too much away, but I will say that I felt the ending fell a little short of what I expected. Although the romance was the main focus of the story, there was build up to Lara’s confrontation with the clan council and this is where the story fell a little short for me.
I found Kane to be an entertaining read and I will go back and read the previous book in the series, Lucas. Kane is a well paced story with plenty of sexual tension and no shortage of steamy scenes. Laura and Kane spark a fire right from the get go with the hot opening fight scene and they keep up the heat with their witty, sarcastic dialogue and chemistry that will curl your toes. Despite my two little complaints I very much enjoyed this story. I was taken in right away and didn’t want to put the book down once I started reading.
The next book in the series will feature Malcolm, Kane’s third brother who has been shunned from the clan. I look forward to reading his story as well.

Hey FV! I read Lucas before Kane, and I preferred Lucas' story. I love the series, but I just felt that something is missing… My review is coming up next week on Kane.
It is a great series… but I would start with Lucas. Like you said, you can read stand alone, but some key elements are in Lucas (and besides I am lusting over Lucas' cover… lol).
You did a great review honey!!!
