My brother was also convinced that the Wings of Mercury experiment had broken time more than three hundred years ago. And that when time mended- by his calculation, in just a few days – all the galvanized would die.
The Wings of Mercury experiment was created by Matilda and Quinten’s great-great and so on, grandfather and was supposed to allow people to travel through time but instead something went wrong and it destroyed everything within a 50 mile radius with the exception of 13 people. Those 13 people were known as the galvanized. They are immortal, super strong and super everything. Somewhere along the way Quinten, using their grandmother’s journal, had figured out how to create new galvanized and Matilda was made.
In House Immortal all hell broke loose. Abraham Seventh showed up at the Case farm and triggered series of events that lead to two head’s of Houses being killed by galvanized. One of the people to have supposedly killed someone was Abraham Seventh but things are not as they seem. The head of that house, Slater Orange, was evil and had captured Quinten Case and forced Case to implant him in the body of the galvanized. So now we have a major player, one of the bad ones, in the body of a galvanized without anyone knowing it.
Infinity Bell opens up with Quentin, Matilda, Abraham and Neds on the run. If they are caught will be imprisoned and/or killed. Quentin is convinced he can fix the time issue and stop all of the galvanized from being killed but they must make it back to the farm and find their grandmother’s journal in order to do that. Abraham has been shot full of dust designed to dissolve his stitches and is in sad shape. Everyone else is running low on fumes and ideas.
The group only has a couple of days to make it across the country undetected and to fix the problem. In a world were everything is monitored and kept under guard, that might be an impossible task. Infinity Bell starts out at a frantic pace and doesn’t let up. The reader will learn who the real bad guys are and will also learn there are some interesting allies out there also. The situation looks to be almost hopeless but the group never gives up in their quest to save the galvanized. Quinten, in particular, is frantic in his drive to save his sister, so much so that he is willing to sacrifice his own life in order to save hers.
There is a little bit more romance in this book than in the previous one. Matilda and Abraham are more a couple here and have some scenes to themselves. House Immortal was more to set up the story and Infinity Bell has dug deeper into each to these characters. The conclusion to this one is bittersweet but understandable. It isn’t what I wanted from the story but it made sense so I wasn’t too upset about it. I learned there is a book three so hopefully some things will change and end up moving towards a different path. I’m not going to spoil anything for the reader because this is one where you will need to need to find things out as the story progresses.
Overall, this is another winner by Ms. Monk. Her books are so full of action and are paced so well that once you start you won’t want to put it down. I’m a big fan of her work and can’t wait for the next one in this series. Final grade- B
I’d fallen for him then, a wounded creature I thought I could heal. Then I’d fallen for the man who had stood with me while my world fell apart.
