In His Command starts off with a bang, as the reader is immediately immersed in the year 2070, decades after environmental events have brought about the Purge. The world is now ruled by the Company and all people who have survived now live in city centers and are controlled, monitored and forced to abide by rules made up to champion the rebuilding of the world’s population. Some of those rules are no homosexuality, no fetishes and definitely no sex for pleasure. Sex is for the continuation of the race, nothing more. Everything is supervised; books, art, movies and even first sexual experiences. The United States is no longer a democracy and unless you conform to the rules you will be punished.
Commander Caspar Cannon is an upstanding member of the society, very respected for his military prowess and has a secret that could get him either killed or sent for rehabilitation. He is gay. Occasionally he is able to sneak away and indulge in his desires, while on one such evening he meets his ‘Blondie” and they have a intense sexual encounter… until the Company crashes the party and they are forced to flee. So it’s surprising when revolution hits the very next day and Caspar realizes the Company bigwig he’s been commanded to escort to safety is none other than his Blondie. Nathaniel Rice is head of the tech division, groomed, perfect and not who he seems.
I had a little trouble with the writing at first, it was choppy and there were some odd sentence structures. It took me a short while to get used to it, then about a quarter of the way through everything smoothed out and I was able to enjoy this couple’s adventure. This being Grand Central Forever’s first big m/m release I was wondering how they would handle the love scenes and just how detailed and explicit they would be. Don’t worry folks, there is nothing held back. Not a thing. This is very much an erotic romance and there is a lot of manloving going on. Caspar and Nathaniel begin their journey not trusting each other, in a world where homosexuality is a crime, Caspar especially sees nothing but ulterior motives and deception when he looks at Nathaniel. They are desperately attracted to each other, but keep their activities to the darkness of their tent at night and try to keep their distance in the light of day.
Their adventure takes them to meeting up with a group of Nomads and suddenly their whole lives come into question. Caspar has never felt any real loyalty to the Company, only joining the military after the deaths of his family to find a sense of belonging. Once he encounters people who are accepting of all types of relationships and pleasures, of him, he loosens up and starts to enjoy falling in love with his Blondie. The rebels and nomads only real motive is to live their lives in freedom, without hatred and break away from the overreaching control of the Company.
This being the first book in a series, there is a very large info dump at the beginning. So much to know and come up to speed on. I have to say though, once I filtered through all the information and really started to get to know these men and learn their past histories and motivations I became engrossed in their story. There are A LOT of sexy times. Some so scorching that I thought I might have to stand in front of my open freezer to cool off. But there is also a sweet romance that develops into a very lovely HEA. The ending is very nicely done and will leave readers extremely satisfied. The secondary characters were well written and I am very much interested in seeing where this series may go and who will end up with whom. I feel like this is a series I can stick with and am sure to be invested in each character’s story. Already I find myself thinking about Darke and Leon, Liz and Linc, and wondering how their romances will play out. Final Grade: B-
“A life I can be proud of. It doesn’t have to be peaceful or easy.” I turned sideways and whispered, “I want to remember this feeling. I want to feel.” Pursing my lips over his quickly, I added, “I want to be allowed to love you.”
