Review: Heat of the Moment by Elle Kennedy

Heat of the Moment Elle KennedyHeat of the Moment by Elle Kennedy is a short novella which was published in the Red-Hot Summer anthology, however this title can be purchased separately.

After having just read Feeling Hot by Elle Kennedy I was ready to read more of the Out of Uniform series so I rushed to buy a copy of the first book in the series, Heat of the Moment. I became familiar with many of the characters in the series and now that I know some of the couples, I’m eager to go back and start at the beginning and read their love stories. Heat of the Moment is the story of how Garrett and Shelby, who eventually get married, first hooked up and how their relationship began.

Shelby, a bakery owner, has had a crush on John Garrett for over a year. Every day when he would come into her bakery for coffee she’d flirt and try to get his attention. But it seems her efforts were wasted since Garrett never took the hint and responded to her advances. She’s basically given up assuming Garrett’s just not into her.

Navy SEAL John Garrett doesn’t even like fancy coffee but he makes a daily trip to Shelby’s bakery to buy a coffee as an excuse to see her. He thinks she’s hot and can’t seem to figure out a way to get her attention. He has a wild past, participating in threesomes with his best friend Carson, but since he can’t get Shelby out of his head, he hasn’t been interested in sleeping around. That is until Shelby overhears Carson and Garrett talking about how Shelby might be too vanilla for Garrett and maybe he should just move on. When Shelby suggests a threesome with Garrett and Carson, Garrett is shocked but will do anything to be with her.

This was a very short story about a budding relationship nearly ruined by misunderstandings and miscommunication. Shelby and Garrett spend an incredible night together (after the very hot threesome) and they both realize in that short amount of time they want to explore their chemistry and feelings for each other and see if they can make a relationship. But insecurities and defensiveness nearly get in the way.

I have to say, I couldn’t figure out why Shelby and Garrett went a whole year lusting after each other and never realized the feeling was mutual. Garrett is experienced and knows how to pick up a woman. Granted he’s smitten with Shelby but a whole year of failed flirting? How did they miss the signals?

I liked how there is not a huge amount of angst in this story regarding the threesome. Shelby experiences a little hesitation since she is inexperienced but there is no shame, jealousy and guilt to weigh down the story. Some might feel it’s unrealistic, me included, but it really works in this story and I liked the intensity of relationship without the obligatory angst and regret.

If you’ve read Elle Kennedy before, then you know she writes a HOT menage scenes. If you have not read this author before, then know this: Your head might ‘slode with the super hot, super sexy menage scene. You have been warned!

The ending comes about rather abruptly, and I really wished there was just a little more. But now that I know how Garrett and Shelby got together, I look forward to reading more about them in future books in the series.

I read the second one. Kind of the same. Meet, hookup, insist on a fling, hero leaves on a mission, I love you. We’ll see how the third book goes.
