Dominic Costigan is back home again after serving eight years in the military. Back in his parent’s basement and back working for his family’s deli. He hasn’t a clue what he wants to do with his life or even what his options are, he just knows he’s a different man after spending time overseas in the middle of a war zone. He’s not the same good time Nicky who joined the military right out of high school. The only thing he does know is that he wants to explore the gay side of his bisexuality more fully. Which is how he meets 39-year-old Luke Rawlings on Grindr.
Luke Rawlings is a divorced father of two teenagers who has no time for emotional entanglements in his life. He’s been down that road before and it did not end well. Now he is determined to keep his home life and sex life completely separate. As soon as his kids leave for a weekend with their mother Luke is on his phone with his Grindr app open, looking for a hookup. Which is how he first meets Dominic.
After meeting Dominic in Strong Signal, I was sure of two things… He was an ass and that this writing duo could totally make me fall in love with him. Trust me when I say that the Nicky you meet in Strong Signal isn’t the Nicky you’ll get to know in Fast Connection. While he still retains his cocky attitude and is able to joke and play around, he’s lonely and lost and unsure about himself. When he meets Luke he quickly realizes their sexual connection is off the charts and is hopeful that they can explore it more fully. But then Luke kicks him out of his bed and house almost the moment he pulls out and disposes of the condom.
I wanted to knock Luke upside the head. Because damn. That’s cold.
Don’t worry! Dominic reaches out and starts to send Luke messages and it’s not long before Luke begins to look forward to their back and forth texts. He even breaks his one time only hook up rule to spend more time with the younger man. They burn up the sheets and burn up the pages and begin to get to know each other. (And when I say burn up the pages I mean it, Megan and Santino bring the sexy with this couple) It takes Luke much, much longer to open himself up to even the possibility of something more. He has all these rules and ideas about keeping everything separate and comes across as cold and closed off at first. Jealousy is what finally does him in and makes him realize that he needs more than just a few hours on the weekend while his kids are out of the house to spend with his lover.
Life is even more complicated by the fact that Dominic’s family is in turmoil financially and emotionally and Luke’s son is involved with Dominic’s sister. Seriously, it’s one hell of a big ole’ mess. This couple has a lot of ups and downs, and Luke does some pretty shitty things. I wasn’t sure that he would be able to grovel enough for a few of his actions, but of course, he does and it’s lovely. In fact, the entire ending was just about perfect.
I adore both Megan Erickson and Santino Hassell in their separate writing pursuits, but as Megtino they are unstoppable. Fast Connection is another winner in the Cyberlove series, which began with Strong Signal. I look forward to whatever they come out with next. Final Grade-B
Warmth filled my chest despite the drafty chill in his room. It filled my stomach, and goddamn I was too jaded to be feeling butterflies, wasn’t I? The feeling intensified when he kissed me again, and I decided the answer was no. I was definitely not too jaded.
“And you agree to continue to complicate the fuck out of my life?”
“Yes.” Dominic smiled fondly. “I can’t wait. So much fucking up. So many complications.”
