Review + Giveaway: Down for the Count by Christine Bell

“So I don’t know why you’re trying to talk yourself out of it now. The hard stuff is over. You dumped the groom, ran out of your wedding reception, and jumped on the back of a Harley in your slip. Then you got drunk and flew to Puerto Rico with your best friend’s older brother, who, incidentally thinks you look smoking hot. Who’s got more balls than you?

Down for the Count Christine BellWhen Lacey Garrity finds her two hours old groom boinking one of her best friends at her own wedding reception, she turns to her other best friend’s older brother for  help.  After racing off on the back of his Harley, she then proceeds to get stinking drunk and when Galen dares her to go on her honeymoon anyway, with him instead, she agrees. Galen then tries to get Lacey to come out of her shell and start living her life for herself. The sparks fly and they both realize that they want far more from each other than to just be friends.

This book had some very funny, laugh out loud moments. The dialogue between Galen and Lacey was amusing, but also sweet and sexy. Lacey has lived a boring life, where everything seems to be planned out by her mother, who was a bitch by the way, or by her just following her family’s expectations. Her friendship with her BFF Cat and Cat’s brother Galen is the only thing she has allowed to be out of the box in her life. She has always wanted Galen and unknown to her Galen has always wanted her too. When they get to paradise the sparks fly and what may have started out as a rebound affair turns to these two falling in love.

I really enjoyed Galen. He says things like this:

“Hey, no harm no foul. I’m not usually one to complain about waking up to a morning cock massage, but I didn’t want to reach the boiling point only to find out you were actually asleep and dreaming about milking a cow.”

Galen was funny and charming and sweet to Lacey. I liked that he didn’t pressure her into sex when they got to Puerto Rico, he let her decide on a sexual relationship with him on her own.  For a boxer I didn’t really get the “I’m a bad-ass” vibe from him, he just seemed like an average hottie. Watching Lacey come out of her shell and try to be wild was funny. There were a few scenes that quite frankly cracked me up. One was the swinger scene…. I saw it coming and when Lacey realizes what the other couple is actually asking her and Galen to do… :) The other was when she loses her top on the beach. Poor girl, having to get all up close and personal with Galen while she’s half-naked and trying to hide.

There were some nice sexy scenes. Not overdone, they don’t take over the story. I’ve always liked the friends to lovers storyline and this one was nicely done. I almost wish there was more to this book. I would’ve liked to have had more time with this couple. Lacey’s best friend Cat was awesome. I really, really hope she gets her own book. All in all I enjoyed Down for the Count and would recommend it to anyone who wants a funny, fast, sexy contemporary romance.

Favorite Quote:

“When you look at me like that, I feel ten feet tall,” he said softly

Emotion clogged her throat, but she swallowed it back. “Women must look at you like that all the time.”

“I’m not talking about what other women do. I’m talking about you and me.” Those dark eyes were intense, as if he knew she was trying to keep her distance and wasn’t going to allow it.

I really enjoyed this one too! There were so many funny moments, especially the “switch” scene! I expected Galen to be a little more bad ass, being a boxer, but regardless I liked his character. His humor made up for it. I hope Cat gets a book and HEA as well.

    • Angela says

I didn’t even care that Galen wasn’t more bad ass, he was so funny. I had all kinds of highlighting going on with my kindle while reading this book.

This sounds like a fun read. I’ve found lately that romantic comedy has been my preference. Light, fun stuff. This would be a new author for me, as well. Thanks for the giveaway!

    • Angela says

I’ve been reading some great contemporary romance lately. Some of it a little heavy, so I needed something light and funny. Good luck with the drawing.

Great review. I love a book with humor. Romantic comedy takes the stress out of a horrible day and makes the next day a little more bearable. Can you tell I have a stressful life at the moment. Love to win a copy.

I hope you enjoy it! I think this author has a few paranormal/ urban fantasy titles out if you end up liking this one, but prefer to try a different genre.

Gosh, this sounds exactly like what I’ve been looking for! You know, after you’ve read quite a few … heavy, let’s call them … books, you need something just like this. Sounds wonderful, and I don’t mean to sound greedy but I really hope I win! Are her other books similar?

    • Angela says

This is the first book I’ve read by this author, but I think I need to look into her backlist. I really hope Lacey’s BFF Cat gets her own book. Good Luck!

    • Angela says

Have you tried Kristen Ashley’s Rock Chick? One of the best BFF older brother books ever. Good luck to you on the drawing.

Storyline looks good, and I love the quotes! Couples who can laugh together are my favorite. It doesn’t seem like there are as many books like this anymore. I love my paranormal, but variety is good!

    • Angela says

I think the new trend is dark, heavy contemporaries. I need a break from that occasionally so I was glad to find another author who writes good humor.
