The Dangers of Dating a Rebound Vampire is book three in the Half Moon Hollow series. The Half Moon Hollow series is a spin off of Molly Harper’s Jane Jameson series. With this book I have done exactly what I hate to do and that is step into the middle of series without reading the other books. Not only did I step into the middle of the Half Moon Hollow series but it was a spin off so I essentially step into the middle of two intertwined series! Not cool on my part. Lucky for me, Ms. Harper has made these books able to stand alone as far as the storyline, we just see many of the character from other books “help” the H/h in the current book.
Gigi is Iris’s little sister. Iris is the heroine from book one in the Half Moon Hollow series, The Care and Feeding of Stray Vampires. She has finally grown up and has accepted a programming job with the Council. Iris and Cal are not happy with her decision but they have armed her with all kinds of vampire weapons and taught her to defend herself. This is Gigi’s first step to independence and being able to live on her own. Her sister has made so many sacrifices for her and she wants to make her proud and show her how well she did in raising her.
Gigi has been around vampires for many years so working at Vampire HQ does not phase her. Plus she has her eye on a certain vampire who kissed her and then disappeared without a trace. She even broke up with her boyfriend because the one quick kiss from a vampire stranger was more than she had ever felt with her human boyfriend. Too bad that vampire has not shown his face for a long time. Gigi thought she saw him stalking her but she can’t be sure so she dismisses it.
One of her first nights leaving her new job she runs into her sexy stranger in the parking lot. This time he isn’t there to kiss her again but he tries to kill her! Gigi has no idea what changed but she is able to defend herself and set off her car alarm. Her car alarm brings members of her family running and she returns home safe and sound. When she arrives Cal informs her that he has hired someone to watch over her and in walks Nik, the very vampire who just tried to off her.
Gigi freaks out and explains the situation Nik thinks she is crazy and has no memory of what she is saying. He also has no memory of meeting her on a previous occasion even though this isn’t the first time Cal has asked him to look after her. Something is going on with Nik and until it is figured out, her family doesn’t want him around her at all.
Nik and Gigi continue to see each other in secret and, at times, Nik continues to try to kill Gigi. Gigi uses the help of some friends to learn that Nik has been cursed but they have no idea who put the curse on him. With some sneaky detective work they eventually learn who is responsible for the curse and why but the only way for it to go away is for Gigi to die or for one of them to make a true love’s sacrifice. Instead of trying to hurt Gigi anymore Nik decides to leave and go far away. Before he is able to leave something happens that changes everything and everyone is left reeling from the consequences.
Molly Harper is funny. Her books are always written so that I will laugh straight through. Her characters are quirky and though sometimes hundreds of years old, she manages to blend their old and new perfectly. Each page is full of laugh out loud moments.
“I don’t know if we should be here right now,” Andrea whispered to Dick.
“If we leave no, we’ll miss a lot, and we’ll just have to catch up later,” Dick whispered back.
Suddenly, Nik started laughing and pointing at Dick, who was wearing one of the few shirts Andrea had missed in her legendary purge of his inappropriate T-shirt collection: “Home is where the pants aren’t.” When he realized everybody was staring at him, Nik cried, “What? Is funny, yes?”
What I think really shines with her books is that she is funny but her plots are clever and well fleshed out. She has a series that is a spinoff of another and all the books flow so well together. There are a lot of characters in this book but each one shines without taking over or making it seem like too much. They each have their own part and play the perfect role.
I admitted to not having read any of this series but that is something I plan to remedy. Fan of Ms. Harper will enjoy this one a lot. I think people have been waiting for Gigi’s story and now that they have it, they will be very pleased with how it played out. If you haven’t read Molly Harper yet, you are missing out. Go pick up book one in one of her series and get to it! Final grade – B
“Centuries of spreading terror and bloodshed across the globe, and I think I just became the girl in this relationship,” he muttered.
