Review: Crave the Night by Lara Adrian

Crave the Night by Lara AdrianAs a huge fan of this series I was very excited to hear that it would continue on with the children of the original breeds. The last book, Edge of Dawn, brought this world 20 years into the future and evolved from its original PNR roots, into more of a cross between paranormal and urban fantasy romance. This is book 12 in the Midnight Breed series and is Nathan’s story. Nathan is a first generation Breed, raised as a Hunter and trained to be an emotionless killer from birth. He was rescued by his mother and a Breed by the name of Hunter in what I like to refer as the “original story arc series.” Now he is the leader of his own squad of trained killers who help the Order fight against any and all threats against both Breed and humans.

Jordana Gates is a young, beautiful Darkhaven raised socialite from a prominent Breed family. Due to her friendship with Carys Chase, daughter of Tavia and Sterling Chase, she has come into contact with Nathan’s squad of fighters and in the last installment they shared a passionate kiss that neither has forgotten. Jordana and Nathan are complete opposites, from different social standings, with nothing in common that should bring them together, except for a passion that draws them back to each other again and again. Jordan is at a crossroads in her life, on the cusp of her twenty-fifth birthday, a time when breedmates normally come into their own, she has an adoptive father pushing her to mate and marry a man of his choosing and settle down. The man he has chosen for her is attractive and successful and has been a constant in her life for years, but he doesn’t set her on fire and make her burn like the fierce Order warrior who is bound and determined that his background should keep them apart.

Crave the Night picks up just a few days after Edge of Dawn and advances the new story arc in intriguing and exciting ways. The death of Reginald Crowe brought to light a new enemy and an even greater threat to the world. Nathan’s team, in conjunction with the original members of the Order, are in a rush to flush out all the members of the terrorist organization Opus Nostrum and the Atlanteans who back them. Their investigation leads them to look into Cassian Gray, owner of an underground fight club. When he seemingly vanishes into thin air, Nathan and his brethren track his movements and are surprised when they lead right to Jordana Gates doorstep.

Every time I open a new Midnight Breed book I am instantly sucked back in to this world and held captive until the last page. I’m thrilled with the direction this series is taking and love that there is a whole new cast of characters being introduced along with fresh plot lines and romances. Nathan and Jordana’s relationship builds in a predictable way given his feelings over his past and how they clash with his new emotions about the innocent, beautiful breedmate. While there was the feel of instant attraction, I thought the Ms. Adrian did a nice job of allowing their romance to develop at a believable pace and the sex scenes to come naturally. Even though Nathan has some sexual hang-ups involving control and being touched, they were easily overcome and didn’t take the sex scenes into erotica territory. This couple has an intense attraction that develops into a very sensual intimacy. Even with Nathan’s dark broodiness and alpha tendencies, Jordana never came across to me as being anything but his equal. Their personalities and differences play off each other well and they will surely become a couple to reckoned with as this series continues.

I have to admit that I was a little disappointed when I found out this book would be about Nathan and Jordana rather than Carys and a certain cage fighter. While this couple isn’t my absolute favorite of the series, I did enjoy their love story and am deeply interested in how the revelations of Jordana’s heritage will affect the ongoing story arc. Carys and Rune do feature prominently and I am now even more intrigued by this couple. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that they are coming up next. Crave the Night is another action-packed,  well written love story from one of the leading authors of paranormal romance. This series shows no signs of slowing down and I think fans will be delighted with the newest addition. Final Grade- B
