Review: Then Came You by Jill Shalvis

Then Came You by Jill Shalvis Animal Magnetism series #5If you are around FV a lot you might notice I am a big Jill Shalvis fan.  She writes, I read.  I can’t help it.  It is as constant as the spinning of the earth or the tides of the ocean.  Sometimes I absolutely love her books and sometimes they are just ok.  It isn’t like I gush over every one, I just like her tone and her style of writing.  Then Came You is book five in her Animal Magnetism series and based in Sunshine, Idaho around same vet practice as previous books.

Wyatt is the new-ish vet working with Dell, Adam and Brady and he also happens to be the one night stand of Emily.  She was never supposed to see him again after they left that vet conference in Reno but now she is faced with him being her boss for one whole year while she completes her internship.  Wyatt does not fit anywhere in Emily’s plans and boy does she have plans.  She even has a calendar on her phone counting down her remaining days in Sunshine, Idaho.  She was never supposed to be in the podunk town but she missed out on picking the LA internship because she was caring for her sick mother.  She can do one year and then get back to a place where she can make real money and support her family.

Right away the chemistry between Wyatt and Emily jumps off the pages.  They are funny together and each one remembers their night together like it was yesterday.

“You do realize that I totally blame you,” she said, breaking the silence.

“Sitting there wearing a goofy-ass tie, driving like you do everything else, which is so stupid sexy I can’t think.”

He swiveled his amused gaze her way. “Anything else?”

She blew out a breath. “Fine. Mock me. Just…keep your hands to yourself.”

He lifted them in a surrender.

“And your mouth.”

Said mouth quirked, and he mimed zipping it closed.

God, she was out. Of. Control.

Wyatt has had his share of moving around and being second place in someone’s life and if Emily wants to play hands off, that works for him.  He ex-fiancée recently left him for bigger and better things and he learned his lesson on starting a relationship with a woman who has one foot out the door.  The trouble with that is Emily can’t seem to keep her hands off him.  What is a man to do when a woman instigates time and time again??

Emily has her own issues to deal with.  Her father is a vet who spent his whole life taking in strays and working for shelters.  She never wants to be without money and be put in the same position her father did with his family.  That is why Sunshine, Idaho will never work for her.  Even if that is where Wyatt, a wonderful, caring man, has put down roots.

Wyatt and Emily are extremely likable characters individually and together.  Though Emily had a plan from the beginning of the book you could see her plan start to fracture.  She wasn’t obstinate about it either.  There were times she just threw her hands up in the air and went for Wyatt.  I enjoyed watching her struggle and eventually give in.  Wyatt was just as engaging.  He was sexy and an all around good guy who in the end let Emily leave to pursue her dream.  For a time anyway but then he had to get his woman!

The story is set in a veterinary office and we are treated to fun and sometimes sad stories of the animals.  I am an animal lover and this book choked me up a couple of times but it also made me smile and laugh at some of the antics that took place.  Ms. Shalvis is very good at writing in little extras like animals that pull you further into a story and make you love it that much more.

Overall, I really, really liked this book.  Generally I do enjoy all of Ms. Shalvis’ books but this one was particularly good.  I didn’t want it to end and could have read about Wyatt and Emily for many more pages.  Fans of Ms. Shalvis and/or this series will love this newest book.  It will make you laugh, cry and happy sigh when everything comes together.  Don’t miss it!  Final grade- A-

“We have to go back to being strangers,” she said.

He just stared at her.

“We are strangers,” she said.

“Yeah.  Strangers who know what each other’s O-face looks like-“
