In 1863, in a world much like our own, European scientists discovered Osiris serum, a concoction which brought out one’s magic talents. These talents were many and varied. Some people gained ability to command animals, some learned to sense water from miles away, and others suddenly realized they could kill their enemies by generating a burst of lightning between their hands…. Eventually the world realized the consequences of awakening godlike powers in ordinary people. The serum was locked away, but it was too late.
Ilona Andrews = Kate Daniels, right (and some other fantastically awesome books but mostly KD)? Well, no. Not this time. Burn for Me is book 1 in a new series The Andrews team has written. I have heard it referred to as the Avon book or the Avon series but I am going to refer to it as 300+ pages of pure awesomeness. Or maybe I will refer to it as my #1 book of 2014? Or possibly the book that made me cry when I realized the next one wouldn’t be out for another year? Anyway, onto a short synopsis.
Nevada Baylor is Baylor Investigative Agency, a family business. She is doing what she can to keep it afloat and when the head of the House holding ownership of her business demands she track down dangerous Prime fugitive and fire mage, Adam Pierce, all she can do is say yes. This will not be an easy assignment, almost impossible but she has no choice. She will not let her father’s legacy be taken away from the family. Though she has no idea how she is going to go about tracking one of the most dangerous men alive, she picks a start to spot and then goes for it.
Along the way she attracts the attention of possible the most dangerous man alive, Connor “Mad” Rogan. Rogan is looking for a family member believed to be in league with Pierce. He forces his way into Neva’s life and dogs her footsteps at every occasion. Neva wants nothing to do with the very dangerous and scary Rogan but he gives her no choice.
“Is that why you joined the military? To get away from your family?” And why did I ask that?
“I joined because they told me I could kill without being sent to prison and be rewarded for it.”
True. Holy shit. I was trapped in a car with a homicidal maniac. Awesome.
“You have a strange look on your face,” he said.
“I just realized I shouldn’t be in the same vehicle with you. In fact, I should have called you in the first place, so I’m trying very hard to rewind time.”
He grinned. I’ve amused the dragon. Whee.
Between the two of the them they must track down Pierce, stop whatever plot he has come up with and return him to his family. When Pierce takes a unwanted fascination with Neva things get even more crazy and the tension is ratcheted up. It doesn’t take long for Neva and Rogan to figure out someone is pulling Pierce’s string and now they have to get to the bottom of an even bigger plot.
Warning- Gushing ahead.
This book. Oh my, this book. I am a huge Kate Daniels fan, but I think it is possible this book is even better than that series. Now this is just book 1 and there is so much left to go but holy moly, the tension, the angst, the power, the everything about this book is amazing. As I write this review I have read it three times now and have every intention of buying the audio when it comes out so I can read it again.
The plot is fascinating in its abundance of powerful people. Rogan has an overwhelming personality and immediately draws the reader in. We want to know more about him. We want to be in his head but because the book is from Neva’s point of view we can only see how he reacts from what she sees of him. I wanted every page to be interaction between these two. The have intense chemistry though Neva attempts to fight it. She doesn’t want to be connected to a man who will be nothing but trouble for her life.
“I know what’s really going on here. You’re scared to step into my world. Afraid you can’t hack it. Much better to hide here and be a big fish in a very small pond.”
“If that’s the way you see it, fine.” I raised my chin. “I have nothing to prove to you, Rogan.”
“But now I have something to prove to you,” he said. “I promise you, I will win, and by the time I’m done, you won’t walk, you’ll run to jump into my bed.”
“Don’t hold your breath, ” I told him.
All of his civilized veneer was gone now. the dragon faced me, teeth bared, claws out, breathing fire. “You won’t just sleep with me. You’ll be obsessed with me. You’ll beg me to touch you, and when that moment comes, we will revisit what happened here today.”
The reader starts out the story believing Neva has no power but as we go along little things are revealed leading us to believe there is more going on with her. She has a unique power and one she has kept hidden. She also might be the only one who has the ability to control Rogan at his highest burn.
Overall, this book has everything. It is funny, sexy, exciting, breathtaking and will have you immediately running to your computer to order the next book. Bravo to the Andrews team for this new series. I am hooked and cannot wait for more. Final grade- A+
“Why can’t you just slice them to pieces like that chopstick?”
“Because my telekinetic magic doesn’t work on living things. I can throw something metal fast enough to slice an opponent to pieces. I can hurl a board at him, because cut wood is dead. I can choke him with his own clothes if they are loose enough. But I can’t simply throw a body.”
Oh. “So the best way to fight you is to strip naked and attack?”
His eyes flashed with a wicked light. “Yes. You should try it and see what happens.”
Well, I did walk right into that one.
