Boots Under Bed is an anthology containing 4 novellas set in the West – think of a time like the old railroad, bounty hunters, women being married off, and rugged men with cowboy hats and leather dusters. All the stories stayed on the side of sweet and not so much sexy, but I found each story interesting and fast paced along with heroes and heroines that had great chemistry.
Crazy Callie by Jodi Thomas was the stand out for me. Callie needs to find a husband to save her ranch from her evil stepfather. She finds Luke Morgan as the man to suit her need. The two embark on a lovely adventure of getting to know each other, saving her ranch, and falling in love. There was just something about the sweet relationship between Callie and Luke and watching these two underdogs find love with each other that this story appealed to me the most.
I also really liked the Scent of Roses from Kaki Warner about two strangers on a train who both seem to have a hidden agenda and are trying to suss out one another. The dialogue and banter between the hero and heroine was fun and flirty, and I especially liked how witty the heroine was.
The other two stories Nat Church and the Runaway Bride by Jo Goodman and The Hired Gun’s Heiress by Alison Kent took me a little while to get into at first. But eventually as with the other stories, the sweet developing relationship between the heroes and heroines kept my interest.
If you like historical westerns that are on the sweet side, this anthology hits on both of those points and provides some easy reading with strong heroines that are easy to like.
She had primed the pump and brought this horse to water. He was definitely going to drink his fill.
