Lana Parker is trying to start a new life for herself as a private investigator. When the woman married to the leader of a local biker club asks for her help she can’t say no. The woman wants out and wants something better for her and her daughter so she hires Lana to take pictures of her husband with other women. She knows there are other women, she has medical proof to back it up, she just can’t seem to catch him with them. Lana has been in a similar position before and will do anything she can to help her get out of that life.
Finding an opportunity to take those pictures leads her to the sex club Carpe Noctem. She has bad history with the club as she was escorted out the last time she was there and she also met James Hunter. She was convinced James was “the one” until she woke up one morning and he was gone. No word, no note, nothing. After two years of nothing from him she knows the chance of seeing him is slim but going to the club still makes her nervous.
Enter James Hunter but…not. When Lana attracts the eye of the very man she is following, Rex, she can’t figure out a way to escape him. Rex is mean, dirty, vicious and has a dead look in his eyes. When someone named Ice comes to her rescue she is shocked to find out it is James. She wants nothing to do with him but will take the rescue if it means getting away from Rex. Unfortunately for both James and Lana, Lana is now on Rex’s radar and he expects Ice to bring her around.
James left Lana two years ago because he was going undercover and because he knew it wouldn’t work. He couldn’t get involved with a woman because he just wasn’t good at trust or relationships. He had been betrayed by his former fiancée and it lead to her death. Now anything serious is off the table. He will rescue Lana and then send her on her way. It may be two years later but nothing has changed. Lana has her reasons for not giving up on getting those pictures and she doesn’t have to explain them to James. But now they must both survive the perils of the mc club and a past that is trying to creep up on both of them.
Barely Undercover set up like two different books for me. The first part featured a more playful, sexy vibe. James is super yummy, bossy and controlling. Lana observes that while he was hot as a cop, now there is something darker and dirtier about him and whatever it is really does something for her. I enjoyed this part of the book and the back and forth between them.
Then something happened and the book got lost. By lost, I mean it turned serious and questionable? Lana’s past comes into play and she is beaten and abused. At one point after she had been kicked and hit she feels up to having a little nookie time with James. I wasn’t following that. While James is undercover and trying to set up a raid, it seems that every time he should be reaching out for his superiors something goes wrong. We know there is a mole within Jame’s organization but I couldn’t figure out how one person could control the whole thing. Why didn’t James bring in someone other than the person he was contacting baffled me. He said scheduled raids had been messed up but how many times can that really happen? There were too many holes and loose ends in the last part of the book for me to take it seriously.
Overall, I did enjoy the book. There are plenty of sexy times with some light BDSM in there. James is a growly alpha which always does it for me. There is a good setup for the next two heroes and I am interested. I think i will definitely be looking for those books. Final grade- B-
“He’s been no husband to me. He turned my greenhouse into a grow-op. Ripped out my petunias and replaced them with weed. Every flowerpot , every window box, every houseplant- weed, weed, fucking weed. My momma had a birthday and I had to give her a weed bouquet. I mean don’t get me wrong. She likes a good joint before bed, same as anyone, but I would have liked to give her something with more color.”
