Welcome to What-To-Read Wednesday. Each week our Fiction Vixen reviewers will tell you about a book they think you need to read ASAP. This week Angela recommends:
The Unleashing by Shelly Laurenston
I adore reading Shelly Laurenston simply because she makes me laugh. I don’t think I’ve ever picked up one of her books and not giggled out loud or smiled the whole way through. I also love that her heroines are just as kick ass and crazy as her heroes. There are no pats on the head from their love interests or treating them like they’re some kind of delicate flower.
The Unleashing is the beginning of her newest series, Call of Crows. I know there was some confusion over if this was just going to be a rerelease of a previous novel, Hunting Season, or an entirely new release. I believe the author cleared that up on her website stating that while some aspects of the two books are alike, the norse mythology and clan names, this is actually a brand new story with all new characters. So we can all rejoice in another Laurenston paranormal series to add to our TBR lists.
If you’ve ever read any of this author’s books, then you know how wild, zany and quite simply insane her characters and situations can be. But, that’s exactly why I read them and why I keep coming back for more. The heroine of this book is Kera, a retired marine who after intervening in a mugging and taking a knife wound to the chest wakes up completely naked and surrounded by giants. Apparently she’s also a member of The Crows and must fight alongside her sister Crows on behalf of a Viking goddess. Everyone around her in this new life is completely crazy. Nothing makes sense and she is shocked to find out that the man she’s been waiting on in the coffee shop all this time is actually much more than she thought.
Vig is a member of The Ravens and the one who intervened on Kera’s behalf in order to save her life. He is also who teaches her how to adjust to her new life and explains to her how it all works. These two are fun and they make an awesome couple. He’s patient and a little scary, she’s trying to figure out her place with a bunch of people who insist on being out of control, but eventually they work it all out. Also, SEXY TIMES! 🙂
Because this is the first book in a new series there is a lot of set-up and introducing of the world building and characters, but I enjoyed it immensely and am intrigued and looking forward to seeing which of the secondary characters will be getting their story told next.
Vig leaned in and kissed her neck. “Don’t you want to get out of these clothes?” he asked her softly against her ear. “Just for a little while.”
He licked a line up her neck to her ear, nibbled on the lobe.“Imagine all the things we can do with our hands alone.”
“You sure you’ll respect me in the morning?”
“I have to, otherwise you’ll just beat me to death with one of those damn hammers.”
“You have no idea how true that is. “
