Welcome to What-To-Read Wednesday! This week Jen recommends:
Pretty Face by Lucy Parker
Last year I read and loved Act Like It by Lucy Parker. I was sad to find out it was her debut book and have been looking forward to Pretty Face ever since I heard about it. This past weekend I made the mistake of starting it at 8pm on Sunday night. Cue one sleepless night and a grumpy office worker Monday morning.
Luc Savage is loosely connected with Richard Troy from Act Like It. Luc is a production director and in the process of refurbishing the Queen Ann theatre. He’s brusque, abrupt, married to the theatre and recently dumped. The press is having a field day with the story of his long-term girlfriend running off with another man and getting married. The real truth is they were merely together on paper and hadn’t been in love for a very long time.
Lily Lamprey is the heroine and though she currently works on TV she has always dreamed of being on stage. One small problem, her voice sounds like Marilyn Monroe’s. Everything Luc has is riding on the production and he cannot fathom casting a bombshell with no acting ability. After watching a casting video Luc decides to take a chance on her and brings her in for an in person. From there, sparks fly.
I adored this book. Every last page of it. The banter is brilliant and witty. The tension is so great. The characters, main and secondary, are wonderful. The storyline is compelling and sometimes heartbreaking. Everything was pretty much perfect. I wouldn’t have changed a thing.
After a long night of being unable to put a book down, I’m now left with a book hangover and the long wait for Lucy Parker’s next story. If you haven’t read one of her books yet, you are absolutely missing out. Pretty Face will easily go on my best of list for 2017.
