I think it’s time for Random Friday to come back. I’m not sure if this will be an every-Friday thing, but I’d like to do it now and then when I’m in the mood.
This week’s Random Friday is my recent DIY project. I love DIY and I love free stuff. So this project was a dream for me. I was gifted this table by a neighbor on our local Facebook “Buy Nothing” group. I knew I wanted it for my kids “hang-out” room but I wasn’t sure what to do with it. It’s solid wood, no MDF, so I considered refinishing it. But I really wanted something fun, and funky so I decided paint was the way to give this piece a new life.
I hand sanded lightly since I didn’t want to soften the details on the table. It’s not a large piece so hand sanding wasn’t labor intensive. I used Valspar furniture paint because it’s good stuff, man. It smooths out nicely and is very forgiving. I used three coats.
Then I did one coat of Valspar antiquing glaze. This was my fist time using an antiquing glaze and I almost chickened out. I’ve done enough DIY projects to know that I DO NOT like starting over because I went one step too far and messed up the whole project. I really wanted to bring out the details of the piece so I did some practice swipes on some scrap wood and then I went for it. The glaze is also very forgiving. The can says it’s workable for about 15 minutes, but I reworked a few sections well beyond 15 minutes using a damp cloth. No problem.
Finally, I used Minwax Polycrylic to protect it since it’s going to be used by…well…everyone in the house I guess. We’re not especially rough on furniture but we like to use it without worry.
Since I am a DIY addict, you’ll likely see more of my projects here on Random Friday. I hope you enjoyed this one.
