Google Reader Discontinued/Dead/Axed/GOING AWAY

Yesterday Google announced the demise of Google Reader. I am baffled but ok Google, whatever. I’ll be looking for another reader to keep up with my favorite blogs. Here are a few alternatives I’m looking at:

Flipboard It looks cool, and you can get it for Mac, PC, iPhone and iPad and android. Maybe other stuff too, I don’t know. And, it’s free.

Bloglovin’: I’m still looking into this one and it comes recommended by FV reviewer Samantha. There are apps for your mobile devices, it’s free and per their website, “With bloglovin´, we wanted to make your blog-reading fun and easy.” I like fun and easy…

Bloglines: They were here…then they quit…then they un-quit and they promise not to quit again. Can I trust they won’t take their toys and go home again? We’ll see. :) I didn’t see any apps in the app store. Since I like to read blogs on my iPad, this one may not be for me. It’s free though and if you only read blogs on your computer, this might be a good GR alternative for you. Here’s a link to the FAQ.

New eMail Subscription Service at Fiction Vixen

I am rapidly losing confidence in Google products as it seems every single one I like falls victim to “spring cleaning” at some point. Our email subscription service is through Feedburner and I’m just not convinced Google will continue to support it in the future. Rather than wait for the ax to drop, I decided to go ahead and find another service that will hopefully be more dependable and flexible. As of today, email subscriptions will be delivered via Mail Chimp. *fingers crossed* I cross my fingers because if it can go wrong, it usually will. I thank you in advance for your patience while I work out any problems. If you’ve subscribed to email updates in the past, you don’t need to do anything; your subscription was moved over to the new service. If you’d like to subscribe to Fiction Vixen you can do that by clicking here. (You’ll get a one email a day, with a summary of posts)

WordPress Search Plugin

Every now and then I like to share when I find a good WordPress plugin. The native search function for WordPress sucks so I’m always on the lookout for a plugin to enhance or replace the native search function. I’d heard of Relevanssi, checked it out, but never tried it.  When Carolyn from Book Chick City recommended it, I decided to give it a go. I am really liking it so far. It’s easy to set up; you can use it as is with default settings or customize it. There are no extra widgets, it uses your standard search form and it delivers good, relevant results. There is a free and premium version. Currently I am using the free version and it’s working great.

I got my first Mac recently and I am in Mac love. I have spent way too much time browsing the App Store looking for apps that will amuse and entertain me make my life easier.

My husband recently ran across this cool thing and I’m pretty sure I need it. I totally don’t.

That’s it for me! Have a great weekend and be good. Ok fine, be bad but take pics! Tomorrow I’ll post a weekly round up and Sunday we’ll have some great books under the Spotlight for our Weekend Feature post.

I’m going with Bloglines for now. I used to use it (and loved it) before it died a short death (then got revived). It’s also the closest thing to GR. I do wish they had an iOS app but for now I’ve added the site to my home screen.
