Going Back to Once Upon a Time
When you’re eight books deep into a series you love, facing the end can be scary. But there’s something even scarier than writing that final and they lived happily ever after…
Figuring out what can possibly come next.
When my co-writer and I were deep in the midst of our seventh book in the Beyond series, we saw happily ever after looming in front of us. We knew the end was coming, and that we’d have to pick a direction soon. Luckily for us, the answer was right there in the pages of our WIP.
From the beginning of the Beyond series, people have been asking about Gideon. The enigmatic leader of Sector One first appeared in Beyond Control. His grandfather was the Prophet and founder of a post-apocalyptic religion—a religion his family still leads. And his cousin, Mad, had repudiated his place as Sector One royalty to become one of Dallas’s closest allies, which hinted at trouble behind the scenes.
But the best part of moving the action to Sector One?
Gideon’s Riders are a group of mercenaries on motorcycles. Their only allegiance is to Gideon. Their only purpose is to protect the royal family and the pacifist population of Sector One. In the past, their duties have involved rescuing people from bad situations and helping fight back against the darkness and corruption creeping through the sectors.
But a war changes things. The sectors are going to look different after the Beyond series comes to its conclusion. Boundaries will be blurred. The Riders will face new challenges from outside their sector and from within. Allegiances might shift. The traditions that discourage Riders from forming lasting relationships might begin to fracture. And new people will be arriving in the sector.
One new person in particular, in fact.

Ashwin and Kora made their rather spectacular debut in book #4 of the Beyond series, when he kidnapped her from the city and brought her to Sector Four to use her considerable healing skills to save Ace. From that moment on, people have been demanding to know more about Ashwin and Kora.
He’s a genetically engineered super-soldier whose sanity has been unraveling around the edges for months. She’s a doctor, a natural born healer—and an orphan whose true origins could put her and everyone around her at risk. When they finally clash…
Once Upon a Time, a soldier came to Sector One, looking for the woman he couldn’t make himself forget. If you want to know what happens next, you’ll have to pick up Ashwin when it comes out. But first we have to finish this little war brewing in the Beyond series…
The very best Once Upon a Times
First books can be tough, but when you find the right one—the one that introduces you to a series you know you could read forever—it can be magic. Sometimes it remains your favorite book forever, and sometimes one comes along later in the series that blows it out of the water.
For a chance to win a $100 gift certificate to Zazzle (where you can pick up tons of O’Kane, or Gideon’s Riders related swag) tell us what your favorite series is. Is the first book in the series still your favorite, or did another book take the crown?
My favorite series is Meljean Brook’s Guardians series. And every time a new book came out in that series, it became my new favorite. I’m fickle like that. 😉
