Jen Goes To Her First Con!! She Has Pics and Swag! *Giveaway*

The Book Bash was my first book conference and to say I was nervous was an understatement.  I was pretty worried I might go all fangirl on an author and embarrass myself.  I even considered using a pseudonym for the day. lol  One of my favorite parts of the con though was meeting Tori from Smexybooks.  She agreed to be my wingman and drag me away if I started to slobber or something equally terrible.  Whew.

We got there around 9am and the doors didn’t open until noon so there was time to kill.  During that time there were authors everywhere.  We sat at a table and made eyes at the back of Kristen Ashley’s head.  I went to the bathroom with Lisa Renee Jones (funny story, someone asked her to sign books while she was in the bathroom.  And no, it wasn’t me.) and Katie Ashley.  Had a chat with Emily Snow and Penny Reid while waiting in line.  It was a pretty eventful 3 hours but they finally let us in!

Aleatha Romig was my first stop.  She was very smiley and immediately recognized the blog.  She was complementary and thanked us profusely for such support when her Consequences first came out.  I couldn’t get any information about the third book, Convicted, out of her other than she did say there would be something good right off the bat.  I WANT.

Next up was Alice Clayton and she is very animated.  And she is a hugger. lol  She jumped up and said she gets a ton of recommendations from Fiction Vixen.  I was thrilled to meet her.  The Redhead Plays Her Hand comes out in December (once again I WANT) and the blurb has me nervous.

IMG_8108

Katrine Halle was the next stop and she is pretty damn hysterical.  I mentioned to her that I might be on team Javier and she told me I was nuts.  That’s ok.  Ms. Halle would be someone fun to party with.  At one point she was following people around and photo bombing.  She just happened to photo bomb me and Paul Marron (YES YOU READ THAT RIGHT!!  I stood next to Rehv).

IMG_8118

At this point we decided to get in Kristen Ashley’s line because it wasn’t looking like it was going to die down at any point.  Her line had some good features.  Tori and I took turns holding our spot in the Kristen Ashley line while we jumped in for signings with other authors.  And we got to meet KA’s sister who was just as lovely as her.  She came around several times to hand out swag and candy and to chat.  She is pretty hysterical.

In between KA’s line, I got to meet Shayla Black and her husband (at least I think it was her hubs.  His name was Mr. Black).  I mention that her book Dangerous Boys and Their Toy was my favorite of hers and really turned me on to m/m/f and she told me that it is very hard to market those books.  She said that New York is way more receptive to m/f/m.  I thought that was odd because most people I know that read menage prefer the m/m/f variety.  But she was very nice also and very easy to talk to.  We also chatted about how much input she has on her covers.  Interesting stuff.

IMG_8110

I slipped in a visit to Maya Banks’ table so I could get a book signed for Amy.  She was very insistent that it be signed “Amy mine”.  Since Ms. Banks didn’t blink an eye I bet she gets that a lot.  Ms. Banks had the best swag.  Some pretty cool cups, pens and notebooks.

IMG_8111

After almost two hours, we finally got to meet the lovely KA.  Folks, she is exactly like you would think she should be.  She is gracious, polite and took the time to have unique, individual conversations with each person in her line.  She insisted that everyone take tons of swag and got up and walked around her table to chat with and take pictures with each person.  If I didn’t love her already, just meeting her would have done it for me.  I was super impressed.

IMG_8112

Our final stop was with Kele Moon and her husband.  At that point I was on my KA high and didn’t think it could be topped.  I was wrong.  Kele was the sweetest, most lovable author there.  She was generous with her time and swag and even gave us a signed first chapter of Wyatt’s book.  I had to go home a reread some of her books after talking to her.  Just because I wanted to!  :)

IMG_8115

Those are some of the authors that stood out for me.  I had a blast at my first book con and met some pretty awesome people.  The authors surpassed my expectations and were all wonderful.  My feet were killing and I was only on them for four hours.  I don’t know how people do it for days!  I will be giving it a shot though because my next con, Coastal Magic, is coming up soon.  I can’t wait.

I came back with a bag signed by most of the authors, a ton of swag, some signed books and some unsigned books that I will be giving away!

Oh, Jen. I just looked at the link for the Coastal Magic con and saw what authors will be there… Amy Lane, Alyssa Day, Shiloh Walker…. There are so many good ones. I either need to send you with a list of people I need you to gush over or attend myself.

  2. Amy R says

I have never been to a con but I want to go to one. RT#13 was held just a few hours from where I live but I was unable to attend.

  3. Tammy says

I’ve never been to a con but I plan to go to one in September, my city is putting together a first one ever and hope to make it an annual thing.

  4. LSUReader says

I’ve never been to a book con but I do enjoy reading about the experiences of others. I think it would be nice to attend RT. Glad you enjoyed your adventure.

  5. Leni says

Never been to one before. RomCon would most likely be my first choice because it’s the first one I heard about.

  6. kp says

Never been to one but would love to go to one some day! Sounds like such a great time!

  7. TrishJ says

What fun!! Never been but always wished I could. I am sure I would step all over my tongue. Oh well, I guess I will just have to enjoy reading about it Thanks for a great post.

I’ve never been to an “official” con but my dream is to someday go to Romantic Times Convention. I’ve heard it is an experience like no other. I keep hoping that it will get closer to my area (WV) but in the last few years it hasn’t gotten closer than Kansas City. :( Maybe someday it will again be in TN.

It sounds like you had a blast, Jen! Do you plan on going again next time or was this a one time thing for you?

I feel very dense, but please explain the difference between m/f/m and m/m/f. Isn’t that the same thing?

  10. Helen Marie says

I love your Book Bash photos! Looks like so much fun. I would try to go to any con that Kristen Ashley was at. It is so cool you got to meet her! I thought she might be as nice as she looks, I’m glad I was right.

Thanks so much for the giveaway! I hope you kept some things for yourself.

  11. EvelynS says

I’ve never been to a con but would love to go to RT!! Thanks for the giveaway!!

  12. Sandypo says

I think I’ve said this before, but I used to work for the company that produces BookExpo America so I’ve been to three of those conventions. My favorite part is getting all the free books (some signed, most not) and being able to read them and share them when I get home. One year I shipped 60 pounds of books home!

  13. Jane says

Love the pics, especially the one of you and Paul Marron. I’ve haven’t been to a convention/conference yet, but would love to someday soon. I think I would enjoy RT and Authors After Dark.

  14. Krysten M says

I’ve never been to one :( but I really want to go to RT next year! Just have to see if I can actually plan for it, and start saving now! :)

  15. Jen B. says

I have been to two conferences. I loved the authors and the meetings and the fun but by absolute favorite part was being surrounded by a whole mess of people that love to read as much as I do. It was nice to know that I’m not alone.

  16. says

I’ve always wanted to go to a book con, never been. I think the awesome swag would be one of the definite perks of going, along with meeting like-minded people. Seems like a ton of fun.

  17. DA says

Never been to one – but I really wanted to go to this one as I heard KA was going to be there. Just couldn’t swing it with time off from work. I am envious of all the authors you mentioned here.

  18. Lori Meehan says

I went to this years RAGT and I had a great time. My favorite part was meeting the great gals of the Book Obsesed Chicks book club and the wonderfully nice authors. I justvhad a great time and I can’t wait till next year.

  19. Diane Sallans says

No, never been to one, but would love to go – don’t know which I would pick – would hav to do some investigation – would want one that includes romance books, so Book Bash or RomCon?

  20. Chelsea B. says

Ha! I’ve never been to one, but would love to! I’d most definitely make a fool of myself. It really isn’t that hard to do ;-)

  21. says

I’ve been to RWA 2009 and RWA 2010, as well as to the humongous signing at RT 2009. I have wonderful memories of each one of them–going to lunch with a bunch of authors, meeting Angela James and having her recognize my handle (yes, I’m a major fan of Angela James, then still with Samhain), spending about an hour on the line to pay for our books–and talking about said books–with Barbara Ferrer. Meeting Alyssa Day, going up for a small get together at Suzanne Brockmann’s suite after a signing, meeting the amazing SuperLibrarian Wendy and the lovely (and much missed) KristieJ of Ramblings on Romance, and so many many many more…

*sigh* I need to win the lottery so I can go to another one.

  22. Susan T. says

Looks like you had ton of fin. Never been to one but would love to go one day. Would love to meet some of my favorite authors but knowing myself, I’ll be all tongue tied.

  23. erinf1 says

I haven’t had the chance to go to any :( So I would be thrilled to go! I’ve got it on my bucket list to go to at least one or more of the major ones like Comic Con and to a book centric one like RWA or BEA :)

  24. June M. says

I have never been to a convention before. I tend to have panic attacks in crowded situations and I have some physical problems that make a lot of walking and standing impossible. I would like to go to a smaller con (like Lori Foster’s) I just need to continue working on my anxieties and figure out a way to get around the probs with walking and standing so much.

    • Jen B. says

June M., I don’t do well in crowds either. I have been to two conferences. I avoided the really big conferences and the really crowded areas. I did go to the dance parties and they were great. I even danced a couple of dances (on the edge of the dance floor). There were quite a few people at the conferences with physical challenges. Readers are a great group of people who totally understand. They’ll even find you a chair if you need one! I hear Lori Foster’s con is amazing. You should give it a try if you get the chance.

  25. Patoct says

Have never been; would love to one day, meeting some of my fav authors would be great.

  26. Kirsten says

I’ve never been to a Con, but I’d love to go! For practical reasons, I think I’d like to attend Arozona Dreamin’ because it’s not far from home. But for the sheer love of books, I’d love to attend Book Bash!! I just love reading and books make me happy – what can I say? It’s the little things. :)

  27. Monica says

I have never attended a con, but I would love to attend RT or the Authors After Dark one. Sounds like you guys had a wonderful time. Thanks for the giveaway!

  28. Melanie J says

This looks like a lot of fun. I would LOVE to attend one of these things someday. :)

  29. Donna D says

I’ve never been to a CON, but think I would like to attend one sometime. Although I’d love to be able to travel a distance to attend, I doubt I’ll ever get to attend unless one is in Oklahoma.

  30. sweetiepiepen says

Looks like you had a ball! I’ve been to AAD once and Lori Foster’s twice. My favorite part has been meeting my Twitter friends, authors and bloggers alike, face-to-face and spending time with them.

  31. Kare says

I’ve never been to one (hard to get time off during the school year!) but I am going to the RWA signing next week because I live nearby.

  32. Pamk says

Love Lori Foster’s get together and Lora Leigh’s raw are great. I’ve also went to a RT signing. Those can make you hurt yourself lol. I am going to Coastal Magic this year and oh I cannot forget Dragoncon. Love that con but it a multimedia con almost like comic con but not quite as big.

  33. SHELLEY S says

I WOULD LIKE TO GO TO THE ONE IN NOLA! THANKS FOR THE GIVEAWAY!calicolady60@hotmail.com

  34. says

Is it too late to enter? *fingers crossed*

I haven’t been to a con but I’m hoping with all my hope that I can attend RT 2014 in NOLA since I live here. I couldn’t do AAD last year but am really trying to attend this one. I did do ALA when it was here, that was fun but I didn’t really know what I was doing. No conferences or panels tho.

Also…OMG you met Kristen Ashley and Alice Clayton!!! *fangirl faint*

  35. L. A. Hennig says

I’ve never been to any of the cons, so I’d be thrilled to get to go to any of them! Loved the giveaway list!! Thanks!!
P.S. Hope it’s not too late to enter — can never figure out if the time zones make a difference since I’m 4 hours behind the East Coast!

  36. Deana Potter says

I attended the first Frederick Book festival this past may. I will also be going to Lore Leigh’s RAW!

I am a newbie to cons but I am hoping to go to RT and ADD next year!!
