I’m excited to have author Juliana Stone, author of His Darkest Hunger, here at FictionVixen.com today.
FV: Tell us about Juliana Stone
JS: According to the Avon/Harpercollins website I’m a mother, rock-star and I live in Canada with my family. I can confirm, YES, to the mother….and wife, as for the rock-star bit, well, back in the day I did perform with an all female rock band. We toured and that’s how I met my husband. It was an experience, let me tell you! But these days we play for fun. Music has been and always will be a huge part of my life. I’ve always felt the need to express myself and am so blessed to be able to share the world that exists in my head!
FV: In your debut novel, His Darkest Hunger, you write about sexy jaguar shifters. Why did you choose to write the big cats?
JS: When I decided to really take a stab at this whole writing thing, my first instinct was to write about vampires. They were my first love in the paranormal world. But I wanted to do something different. I had the opening scene for this book in my mind. My hero, Jaxon is somewhat of a predator…big cats just kind of seemed logical to me. Sexy and strong, highly efficient hunters…they were perfect shifters for the world I had in mind.
FV: Jaxon and Libby’s relationship is complicated. There are times when Jaxon is not very nice to Libby, even though he is still attracted to her. Do you think it was risky creating a hero/heroine relationship such a huge range of emotions?
JS: When I started writing this book I didn’t think about risk, or anything like that. To me the compelling thing about their relationship is the thin line between love and hate. I’m a sucker for the whole betrayal angle and love when in the end, love truly conquers all. Makes for a much more satisfying HEA if they really have to work for it. And when you have a character who has flaws…that just makes them more real to me.
FV: Do you have any plans to write a full length PNR novel or series featuring something other than shifters?
JS: Right now I’m contracted to write 4 books in this series, which is what I’d originally envisioned. Of course I have all sorts of possibilities for it to continue with a different story arc and I hope to be able to do that. However I do have a YA with my agent right now that we’re hoping to pitch in the next little while and I also have an Urban Fantasy that I’d love to write. I just need more time!
FV: In your short story Black Legacy your write about an infamous rock god Dekkar James, living three hundred years in the past, and a warrior woman who shifts backward or forward through time. I find this intriguing. Can you tell me a little about that?
JS: I love, love, LOVE time travel. When I was younger, like 25 years younger I had a major infatuation with first, The Doors, then Elvis Presley, The Beatles (even then it was all about the music!) I used to fantasize about being able to go back in time and hang with Jim Morrison….man, that would have been a blast! So now, in this world I created, to be able to take it to the next level…to be able to shift forward or backward, to travel to different galaxies, that just opens up so much!
So, the idea was born and I can write about all the Black sisters and their efforts to foil the nefarious plotting from The New Order. They are warrior women who’ve always had the ability to travel through time and space. Their mission is to protect the universe from rogue jumpers, people who would use time travel as a way to further their own agenda…always for evil!
FV: Who was your inspiration for the character Dekkar James?
JS: Dekkar James was inspired by Nikki Sixx of Motley Crue. Plain and Simple. I’d just finished reading The Heroin Diaries and knew I wanted this first hero to look like him, and have his experiences. Plus, I’m a huge fan girl of The Crue and love Nikki. No apologies and well, the picture I use for inspiration is freaking yummy! Dark, dirty, tattooed….sigh….he is a ROCK GOD!
FV: You’ve said that you’re inspired by Christine Feehan and Keri Arthur and Lynsay Sands. What is it about these authors works that moved you to begin creating your own paranormal series.
JS: I love all of these ladies. Keri Arthur was a new to me writer a few years ago. I gobbled up her Riley Jensen series. But, Christine is the queen. I picked up a copy of Dark Prince about five years ago and my world changed. I love her Carpathian series with the alpha males and the women who can save them. They are dark reads full of passion and imagination. One day I hope to grow up and be as good as she!
FV: What do you like to read when you’re not writing?
JS: I love all kinds of books. Paranormal of course. I love YA and just recently rediscovered my love of a great Historical. On my TBR pile right now, are The Duke and I by Julia Quinn. First Drop of Crimson, Jeaniene Frost, Dark Curse by Christine Feehan and Beautiful Creatures a YA that I’m really enjoying.
FV: Who is your favorite paranormal/urban fantasy fictional character? (not including your own)
JS: Riley Jensen. I love her to pieces. Arthur has done an amazing job of creating a woman who lives by her own rules, loves passionately and gives no apologies for the things that she does. She rocks big time.
FV: I understand you are a big fan of the 80’s. (me too!) Tell me, who is your favorite band from the 80’s?
JS: U2, Bon Jovi, Guns and Roses. (can’t pick one)
FV: Pick a line from your favorite song by U2, Guns and Roses or Bon Jovi, and tell me what it means to you.
“As you close your eyes know I’ll be thinking about you. While my mistress she calls to dance in her spotlight again. You know I won’t be alone, but you know that don’t mean I’m not lonely.”
JS: Love these words from Bed of Roses by Bon Jovi. Totally captures the isolation you feel on the road and what it means to miss the people that you love. This song incidentally was the first dance for hubby and I and man, it’s freaking long!
FV: Thank you for being my guest today Juliana, it was lovely talking with you and getting to know a little about you.
