Fiction Vixen is pleased to welcome author HelenKay Dimon today.
Thank you for having me here today to talk about my newest release, NO TURNING BACK. The story focuses on the sons of a notorious con artist, Charlie Hanover.
Charlie was a very bad guy. His sons have a naughty streak and are not perfect, but at heart they are decent guys. When writing this series I tried to imagine how the children of a nasty guy would turn out. Clearly, their mom helped to keep them from being just like dear ‘ole dad, but I didn’t want them to be perfect. After all, isn’t there something compelling about a hero who’s a bit naughty? I think so, and I bet I’m not alone. And when there’s something beneath the naughty that’s truly heroic? Well, I’m hooked.
Declan, the hero in NO TURNING BACK, pumps the heroine’s gas (not a euphemism…I really talking gas tank):
He walked over and lifted the gas nozzle for her and started pumping her gas. The move was so natural and non-threatening that she stepped back and let him do it. She tried to remember if any man had ever offered to pump her gas or just done it to be helpful. If this was part of some elaborate con to prove he was decent, she understood why men like Charlie were so successful. The moves worked. The charm reeled you in and you got hooked.
His words finally registered. “Wait . . . what?”
She reached for the hose. “I can get that.”
He set the lock and let the meter click as the tank filled. “It’s under control.”
“Are you going to pay for it, too?”
“If you need me to.”
He kisses like he was born to the task:
“We could resolve the confusion by staying away from each other.” She put her hand against his chest to push him away. His heart hammered under her palm.
“Not going to happen.”
“I get a say in this.” Not that she intended to use a veto right now.
He leaned in with his entire body. Only her hand separated them as his mouth brushed up the line separating her cheek and her ear. “Then tell me to stop.”
It was all she could do to keep from grabbing a fistful of his shirt and dragging him in even tighter.
“That’s what I thought,” he said right before his mouth settled over hers, full and deep.
The kiss wasn’t subtle or short. He didn’t linger or caress. He dove in, his lips angling over hers as a groan rumbled in his chest. His hand rubbed the base of her neck and dipped into her hair. The other one slipped around her waist as his body pressed her into the wall.
Legs tangled as their hands slid over each other. She rotated her hips until she cradled his obvious bulge between her legs. He had her short of breath and aching to tear off his clothes. Even while she struggled to step away, a voice inside her head screamed to forget everything, everyone, and take this for her.
And he looks mighty good doing whatever he’s doing at the time:
The man behind Mallory got up and turned around. The muscular build and close-cropped dark hair suggested military. The faded blue jeans and broad shoulders straining against the seams of a navy T-shirt said he was good at whatever he did—lifting cars, wrestling tigers . . . something that required the impressive biceps peeking out from under those short sleeves.
Maybe Mallory was right. Sweetwater did need more men.
Don’t you love heroes? 🙂
