Bad Boys and Good Girls
Why are bad boys in romance novels so addictive? Maybe it’s because they represent danger, adventure, out-of-the-ordinariness. Of course, we readers don’t want a truly obnoxious bad boy. We don’t want a violent, rude, sexist pig. Which is why the reformed bad boy is so alluring. Yes, he has a rough and dangerous edge, but hard experience has taught him a thing or two, and there’s a softer, hidden side to him which comes to the fore especially for the heroine.
Of course, the bad boy must be paired up with a good girl. Bad boy + good girl = lots of conflict. The good girl is smart. She knows she shouldn’t be mixing with the bad boy, but there’s something about him that’s just too irresistible.
Ally Griffin, the heroine of my new Entangled Bliss romance, Real Men Don’t Break Hearts, has been a good girl all her life. She’s never lied, cheated, or stolen, but still her heart is broken by her weasel of a fiancé, whom she always thought was a good boy. Whereas she’s always known Nate Hardy is the bad boy. When Nate returns to town, she finds him inexplicably attractive, despite knowing his torrid history.
“She might be in need of a little adventure, but messing with Nate would be more like a suicide mission. She’d heard all the stories about how he operated. Any woman who fell for his charms had to be prepared for a quick and brutal heave-ho. When Nate tired of a woman, he cast her off smartly, like a snake shedding an unwanted skin.”
But, of course, even smart girls lose their heads once in a while.
Nate Hardy is all too aware of his less than perfect past. He returns to his hometown a reformed man, but even though he’s cleaned up his act, his disreputable past still has a habit of biting him in the rear end when least expected.

Real Men Don’t Break Hearts
By Coleen Kwan
Entangled Publishing – December 2012
Ally Griffin is horrified to learn her new landlord is none other than the infuriating playboy Nate Hardy—the man she blames for getting her jilted at the altar six years ago. Plus, now her ex-fiancé is back in their hometown of Burronga, Australia, to marry his beautiful new bride…for real this time. Everybody’s treating Ally with kid gloves, as though she’s still heartbroken, but she’s just fine, thank you very much.
Nate Hardy is tired of his high-flying city career and bachelor lifestyle and is looking for something more real. The last thing he needs is to find himself undeniably attracted to Ally, the woman with whom he never saw eye-to-eye. But is he even capable of what Ally wants and deserves?
As Ally tries to pull her life out of the rut it’s fallen in, she doesn’t count on Nate stirring up her emotions. A short-term fling with the resident bad boy is practically irresistible, but only if she can guard her heart…
Coleen Kwan has been a bookworm all her life. At school English was her favorite subject, but for some reason she decided on a career in IT. After many years of programming, she wondered what else there was in life — and discovered writing. She loves writing contemporary romance and steampunk romance.
Coleen lives in Sydney, Australia with her partner and two children. When she isn’t writing she enjoys avoiding housework, eating chocolate, and watching The Office.
