Blurb from Goodreads:
IS MARRIAGE A BLESSING OR A CURSE?
A man of honor, Alexander Hallworth, Marquess of Pembrooke, will not rest until he exacts revenge on the man who destroyed his family. Just one more piece must fall into place for him to succeed he needs to convince his enemy s fiancée, the tragically beautiful Lady Claire Cavensham, to marry him instead.
Lady Claire s curse has always left her one misstep away from social ruin her past three engagements have gone awry, and now her fourth is headed in the same direction. . .until Alex, a man she barely even knows, shocks the ton and Claire by announcing their engagement. What begins as a sham turns into something deeper, and more passionate, than either Claire or Alex could have imagined. But when their secrets are revealed, will the truth behind their union scandalize them both or is their love strong enough to break the curse and lead them toward their happily ever after?
I tried for about a week or two to get into this book. I picked it up, I set it aside. I picked it up again a couple of days later and then set it aside once more when it failed to hold my interest. The premise is one I would normally find interesting.. a man bent on revenge and a woman who is cursed come together and find love, I just for the life of me couldn’t drum up any excitement for either this heroine or this hero.
Alex is, well, a jerk who purposefully ruins Claire’s engagement simply because he wants revenge on his ex best friend for his involvement in Alex’s sister’s death. Frankly, his behavior and inner thoughts turned me off. One minute he is stoically planning out how he is going to ruin his enemy by stealing his intended and then marrying her himself, the next he is acting the lovesick fool to Claire. I did not care for him at all. I actually skipped ahead to see if things got better between this couple and glimpsed lots of drama and angst, which would normally be like catnip to me, but instead made me tired.
I did feel sorry for Claire, but for some reason never connected with her enough to wonder how she would react when she discovered Alex’s deception. In the end I decided to just set this book aside for good and move on. Final grade-DNF
