Dark Skye is the 14th book in the Immortals After Dark series by Kresley Cole, which happens to be one of my absolute favorite go-to series when I want something sexy, emotional and full of angsty, action-packed goodness. This author isn’t afraid of alpha males, kick ass heroines or the long, drawn out story arc. If you are reading this review chances are you have picked up at least a few books in this series or are familiar with this author. If that’s not the case and you’re thinking you might want some new paranormal romance in your life, let me just say up front that this is not where you want to begin. When I say long, drawn out story arc I am not kidding.
One of the things I like best about this series IS the long reaching story arc and how all the different plotlines intertwine with each other. I’ve been waiting on Thronos and Lanthe to get together since way back when I first saw them snarling at each other in Carrow and Malkom’s story, Demon from the Dark. Especially since they looked to have so much backstory. I simply adore that Kresley Cole’s not afraid to reach all the way back hundred of years to begin a love story.
“To me, you smell like no one else in the world ever has, or ever will.” His gray irises glowed silver with emotion. A breeze ruffled his sandy brown hair. “It means you and I are going to be best friends. When we grow up, we’ll be… more.”
Lanthe and Thronos have a lengthy, difficult history between them. What started out as a unique and beautiful friendship as young children soon turned into hatred and fear on one blood soaked night. Lanthe, the Queen of Persuasion, and her sister have lived in terror for the last five hundred years as Vrekeners have again and again attacked them unmercifully. Thronos Talos, the Vrekener prince, has always known the beautiful Sorceri is his mate and at one time loved and confided in her. Now he just wants to punish the treacherous, unfaithful woman for a lifetime of physical and emotional pain.
Their story picks up exactly where the last several installments have… as they are escaping the Order’s prison where so many Loreans are being held for experimentation. Thronos has been tracking his mate for so long that he is willing to do anything to catch and keep her. Even go into a Vrekener’s worst nightmare and venture deep into the Order’s tunnels, following her as she and her witch friend escape. Once he catches up with them and literally drags her unwillingly to safety their adventure begins.
Thronos is not kind to our heroine when they finally meet up again, he’s rude and angry and just about as emotionally vicious as a five hundred year old immortal virgin who has chased his mate across the world as she lives her life without him can be. You heard me right, he’s a five hundred year old virgin. (Angela falls over dead) Lanthe is the epitome of a bad ass, unapologetic heroine. She’s wickedly sarcastic, powerful in her own right and is not about to apologize for her sexual history. No matter how many times Thronos verbally jabs at her and tries to make her feel small, she is not about to say she’s sorry for living her life and having some experience. No way. Never.
Gahhhhh, I love this type of heroine. Love.
“I like myself!” she cried. “Did you never consider becoming what I need?”
This couple’s journey takes them through portal after portal, through demon realms, deep underneath the sea and into danger time and again. The action never lets up for a minute as they learn the truth about each other’s pasts and slowly discover how to let that past go and live in the present. Thronos is tortured by wanting his mate in spite of thinking that she has betrayed him repeatedly over the years. He’s not just inexperienced sexually, he literally has no idea what romantic love means. Yet he has protective instincts that lead him to keep his mate safe under desperate circumstances and every time they make it thorough another life and death situation he finds something else to admire and respect about her. Lanthe forces him to accept her exactly as she is, through the slut shaming, aggressive anger and general douchery he keeps pumping out her way, she just stands her ground and refuses to be anybody but herself. Let me warn you, Thronos is like quite a few other KC heroes, he’s a total asshat for a good portion of this book, but goes through an amazing transformation until he eventually becomes an understanding and loving husband. I thought he was completely, believably redeemed by the happily ever after. Also, he and Lanthe have some pretty scorching hot love scenes as she’s teaching him how to be the lover she needs.
“That’s right, Thronos. I want to make you remember that and everything else. Because our love story is epic.”
As the Ascension draws ever closer, alliances are shifting with every new story and Nix the Ever-Knowing continues to play a deep game. There were several new developments that will hopefully finally, finally give readers what they’ve waited fourteen books for. I have no idea who book 15 will be about. Will it be Fury? Morgana, Queen of the Sorceri? Maybe Kristoff? I have absolutely no idea. The plotting in this series is so intricate that I can’t imagine how Ms. Cole keeps it all straight.
I am completely addicted to this series, every new release is just as captivating as the previous one, once I picked Dark Skye up I found myself unable to put it down until I read the last word. I definitely recommend. Final Grade- A
When drops from the canopy kissed her face he drew his wings over his head, creating a shelter. “I’ve always room for you too.”
