Chance by Monica D. Pitts-Lack
Haunted by a bloody past, Claire Devereux finds herself running for her life the summer after her high school graduation. Four years later, things are starting to look up for Claire. She has a new job, new friends, and an undeniable interest in a Navy Pilot. That is, until her past catches up with her. This time, there is no running. Embracing the life she has tried to forget, Claire is ready to fight for survival. Armed with a new found confidence, it is time to take back what is hers.
“Why don’t we get out of here,” I suggested as I grabbed her hand and laced our fingers together. We had come so far in such a small amount of time.
“Okay,” Claire agreed with a sparkle in her eye and a smile on her face. “Let’s get some beer and pizza and take it back to my place for a movie.”
“Sounds like a plan.”
“Then let’s get going, Top Gun. Times a-wasting,” Claire said with a playful tug of my arm.
I smiled. “Yes ma’am.”
We waved at Charlie on our way out of Sully’s, and he reciprocated with a nod in our direction.
The air was crisper than when we had arrived at Sully’s, and I felt Claire shiver. The walk to the Impala wasn’t far, but I pulled her close to me and rubbed her arm in an effort to warm her body. Claire stopped suddenly.
“Can I drive?”
I turned to look at her, brushing the hair away from her face. “I don’t know. That’s a pretty steep request.”
“I’ll make it up to you,” she teased.
“Okay, but on two conditions.”
Claire wrapped her arms around my waist as I rubbed both her arms to keep them warm. I leaned forward, kissing her passionately as I tangled my hands in her hair at the nape of her neck.
“That was the first one.”
Claire smiled and bit her lip. “And the second?”
“That’s for me to know and you to find out.”
