Ok so, after a what seems like forever, Burned by Karen Marie Moning has finally released. The team here at Fiction Vixen are fans of the series. Big. Fans. But, with all the release delays and weird teaser information, we became disgruntled during the past two years while we waited for Burned.
But, it’s finally here and we did what we always do; we gobbled that book up with ketchup.
I thought the Fever series had either concluded or was on hold and KMM was putting out a trilogy based in the fever world. Dani’s spin-off. But then Burned comes along labeled as Fever series number 7 and we got a whole lotta Mac in this one. And maybe not in a good way. We’ll discuss that later.
Here are our thoughts.
Warning. Read no further if you have not read Burned. Spoilers ahoy and there is no summary, just our thoughts about Burned.
MAKE JADA GO AWAY?!?!
Sophia: My first reaction was NO. Don’t like. Stop it. I do not like this twist. But Jada has grown on me. I like her. I just don’t like that Dani is “gone”. I don’t like that we have to have either/or. I miss Dani, but Jada is such a bad ass and she gets to kiss Ryodan!! I don’t want to think of Dani kissing Ryodan. Ryodan needs kisses dammit! I’m conflicted.
Jen: Gone. I want her gone. I liked Dani in Iced. I liked her dudes and fecks. This Dani/Jada is cold and unlikable. Tell me something redeeming about her. Tell me something we learned that made her likable.
Ryodan says softly, “Holy strawberries, Dani, we’re in a jam.”
I look at him like he’s sprouted two heads. Holy strawberries? In a jam? Even Barrons looks stumped.
He continues, “But don’t worry. Holy priceless collection of Etruscan snoods—you really butchered that one, by the way—I’ve got it in the bag. How about this one: holy borrowing bibliophile, let’s book.”
This is the Dani I loved.
Angela: I’m firmly in the make Jada go away and Dani come back camp. Even with all my misgivings about Dani before Iced, I simply adored her after reading it, and now I miss her. Like Jen said, Jada is cold and unlikable. I want the crazy girl who zoomed everywhere and won me over in Iced. I don’t even care if this new incarnation gets to kiss Ryodan, it’s not the same. That scene did nothing for me other than make me think she needed to back the fuck up and get her lips off Ryodan. A grown up Dani with Dani’s personality work for me, Jada does not.
Sophia: Barrons and Ryo are brothers?? Ryodan just got an upgrade. He has Barrons DNA. Fuck yeah! He was hot before, but knowing he’s Barrons’ brother does something for me. Something nice.
Jen: Color me shocked. How? Why? And was anyone else weirded out about Mac waxing poetic about Ryodan’s penis? I can’t even think of my BIL that way. Ick and Ew.
Angela: My first thought was “Huh? I totally missed that.” And yes, I was slightly icked out during the Ryodan’s penis and hot body scene. I do think it’s badass that he is Barrons’ brother. I wonder if this was KMM’s plan from the beginning.
Sophia: I love Lor and Jo together. I’m dying over that one. I love me some Lor and when he pretended to be Priya? Just loved him more. It’s a douche move but apparently I’m ok with it. Lucky Jo.
Jen: I still don’t like Jo. I don’t like that she ‘gets’ the courtesy of making someone like Ryo look like he is brought low by her. She is nothing to me in this book and series. But I adore Lor. Who doesn’t after reading Burned?
Angela: I hated Jo after Iced, but now I’m kind of digging her. I don’t mind her dumping Ryo. I especially like her and Lor together. Jo and Lor stole the show for me. Lor pretending to be Priya? Priceless. Jo thinking he wouldn’t remember any of their hot sexing when he came out of being Priya? Awesome.
Nine? Ten? Let’s Discuss
Sophia: Daegus lives!! He lives!! We kinda saw that coming right? I mean even KMM isn’t that mean. So what does this mean? Is Daegus one of the nine? Or, does Daegus make ten? Did Ryodan make him like the nine? Or…what? What happened? I guess we’ll know in 5 years or so.
Jen: We totally saw that coming! He is one of her favorite heroes. She couldn’t kill him off. I think Ryodan did something to him when he went back to get the body. What? I don’t know and I doubt that KMM will ever specifically tell us. I think that would be answering too much about the Nine (Ten).
But the Nine. Superstars of this book. I wish instead of invisible Mac we could have had their pov.
Angela: My reaction to the “cliffhanger” ending? Please. I’ve done Fever cliffhangers, this ain’t no big deal. I”m wondering if he’s actually one of the nine or like Jen said, they did something to him when they went and retrieved his body. We haven’t met two of them. Or is it three? There was so much more of the nine in Burned that it makes me wonder what KMM’s plans for them are in the upcoming books. I can’t wait to see. I NEED MORE.
We Want Mac Back!!!
Sophia: What happened to the badass Mac? Who is this wimp hiding in the shadows, afraid of herself and a little evil book? This is not our Mac. I want her back. This wimpy Mac causes a weird disconnect in her relationship with Barrons. I don’t feel like they are on shaky ground, but we definitely don’t see that “stuff” that makes them awesome together this time. I want Mac back please. Make it happen Moning.
Jen: Mac 2.0 raise your hand. What happened?? What the heck happened.
One thing I do know is things can always get worse, most often at the precise moment you’ve decided they can’t.
And so I remain, as Barrons would pithily say, idiotically passive.
She was almost worse than when we first started because we suffered and cried through Faefever. That was painful for me. Mac reverting back is almost a betrayal in a sense. And how can this be the person Barrons wants to be with. I know I don’t want her around. I want to bang my head at how she would just blurt secrets out to any random person. That shit is NOT funny. It is NOT cool.
“Her brain vanished when her body did,” Ryodan says to Barrons. “Apparently,” Barrons says.
Angela: Sigh. This was what I was afraid of when I heard Mac would be back in Burned. She was passive and whiny and unsure and I did not recognize her. I KNOW she and Barrons are good after reading the original Fever books, but if this is where I had started I wouldn’t even think these two had chemistry or a devotion to each other. Please let the old Mac show up in the next book. Please.
Mac AND Barrons
Angela: So what’s up with this wiping her memory crap? Why do we have to mess with Mac and Barrons after we’ve already been through hell and back with these two? As soon as I read the very beginning of Burned I knew I was going to end up pissed. And I was. The whole betrayal, memory wipe ridiculousness felt manufactured to create conflict since KMM had to give Dani time to get older since so many readers were icked out that she was so young in Iced. I know she had to have Mac be the main protagonist so Dani could be “missing” for awhile, but for heaven’s sake why the new couple drama between her and Barrons? Couldn’t rescuing Christian and Mac trying to get the book out of her be enough?
Jen: Contrived conflict much? The part at the end where Barrons returns to Chesters before Mac and she sees it? That was so much a ploy to get the reader upset. It was a ridiculous one. And speaking of Mac being at Chesters, does this mean she will start Feverborn invisible? Either way, I want this back. Cause Barrons is the shit.
What I know, brother, is you break every goddamned rule for Mac.”
“Back at you, Ry. Difference is, I’ll help you do it.”
“Lor has never been Pri-ya.” Ryodan shakes his head in disgust. “The princess can’t turn us. Son of a bitch, Mac’s ass is—”
“Mine,” Barrons says flatly. “You will never go there. You have a problem with Mac, you work it out with me. I am her shield, I am her second fucking skin.”
Kat and Kasteo
Sophia: Who is Kat PG by? O’Bannion, Cruce? What will this mean? Will Kasteo and Kat hook up? Will Kasteo ever speak again?
Jen: Cruce. It has to be Cruce. Who knows what it means but I love this part of the storyline. Kat and Kasteo work for me. They work very well.
Angela: It’s totally Cruce. Totally. I’m not sure what’s up with Kat and Kasteo if that’s the case, but I’m thinking it’s Cruce’s baby. And I love, love, love these two together.
The Dark Prince? Not Dark Prince? What’s up with Christian?
Sophia: So glad he’s not “gone” There is definitely more coming for Scots in this series. definitely. Who will Christian end up with? Surely KMM will have a HEA for the “well hung Scotsman” right?
Jen: Christian….its like the whole plot to this 500+ page book was how to rescue Christian. It happens and then poof. All done. Book over. He goes back home with his family to never be seen from again? I suppose he has to be because he an Unseelie Prince now.
Angela: One of my favorite parts of Burned were of Christian thinking of his beloved Highlands to keep himself sane. Loved those parts. He’s an Unseelie Prince now, and with Cruce under wraps and the other two dead I would think he would almost HAVE to be in the next book. Right? As far as who he ends up with….? I have no idea. None. What if it’s the Unseelie Princess? OMG. That would be… I mean that wouldn’t happen right?
The funny thing about this book is had anyone but KMM written it, most people would think it a flawless piece of work. However we all suffered, cried and bled through five books of what was an amazing story and now parts are being rewritten, redone and broken up. This story was riveting. It was compelling. It was really good. We don’t think anyone can doubt that. We haven’t heard anyone say they were bored. But…..there is a big but in all of that.
Overall, you can see we had some varying opinions. From Jen pouting in the corner to Sophia……. and Angela stuck in the middle between love and hate, I think we can still all agree on one thing and that is we will all be anxiously hitting refresh on our kindle’s the day Feverborn is set to release. Now can we all hope that really is Oct of 2015 like it says right now?
