The Threadbare Heart

A photo of her sons. A doormat from Target. Twenty-three tubs of fabric. Somehow it comforts Lily to list the things she lost when a wildfire engulfed the Santa Barbara avocado ranch she shared with her husband, Tom. He didn’t make it out either. His last act was to save her grandmother’s lace from the flames-an heirloom she has never been able to take scissors to, that she was saving for someday…
As she negotiates her way through her grief, mourning both the tangible and intangible, Lily wonders about her long marriage. Was it worth all the work, the self-denial? Did she stay with Tom just to avoid loneliness? Should she have been more like her mother, Eileen-thrice-married and even now, approaching eighty, cavalier about men and, it seems, even her daughter’s emotions?
It’s up to Lily to understand what she could still gain even when it seems that everything is lost. Someday has arrived…
I’ll be reviewing this book here at FV in the coming weeks. I’ll admit, sometimes I shy away from books that threaten to reduce me to tears but sometimes one catches my eye and I need to read it. The cover on this one is beautiful and caught my eye right away. This is one I’ll save for a weekend, cuddled up on the sofa with a box of tissues handy.
I will be looking forward to your review of this one. I really shy away from things that might make me stop and think and/or cry… So, I am really interested to see what your thoughts are.
Have a great Friday!
Cecile–I used to avoid contemporary all together because of the tear factor. I choose carefully now and I've enjoyed some really good books. BTW have you read Broken by Megan Hart? I sobbed but oh so good!
Wow, this one sounds like a tear jerker. I'm gonna let you throw yourself on that grenade and then tell me about it, ok? I'll be looking forward to your review.
Thanks for having my back B. LOL
You do like to torture yourself, yes?
LOVE the new background and tricksy tabs
Mandi–Yes, apparently I do. I like walking around with puffy eyes. It's my new look.
Pretty I like your new look. Why can't you come over to my place and redecorate!
SHB–Because, we'd have to scrap off years of wall paper, strip the floors, then there's the matter of the dead bodies in the basement. It's a lot of work.
The blurb alone was breaking my heart – don't know if I have the constitution for this one – looking forward to the review.
Oh man… I have a soft spot for books and movies like this. I'm not sure if I can handle it.
Looking forward to the review — if it lives up to that blurb, I'll definitely be reading this one.
