Fiction Vixen is pleased to welcome Lynn Raye Harris today.
I love military heroes. I married one, and I know how dedicated and selfless they have to be to stay the course for a military career. I also love romance novels, so when I got the opportunity to write and publish a series of stories about a military black ops team, I was in heaven.
In the current military, women are not allowed to serve in Special Forces. When I created my team, the Hostile Operations Team, I wanted it to reflect the military as much as possible. But HOT is also very special, and they can do things other special ops teams can’t. They are quietly bringing in women because it started to make sense for them as I wrote the stories. My team is based on the military, but they are evolving in ways our current military isn’t yet doing.
HOT REBEL is about HOT sniper Nick “Brandy” Brandon and a woman he once went to sniper school with. Victoria Royal had to leave the Army (you’ll see why!) but she had a skill and she put it to good use. She hired herself out as a mercenary, and she’s right in the middle of a war zone when she meets Nick again.
There’s a lot of military action in this book, but there’s also some seriously sexy action—because this is a romance, and these two need an outlet for all that tension.
The tension between Nick and Victoria isn’t just sexual. There’s also the tension that comes from being on opposite sides of an issue and being forced to work together for a common goal. These two smolder in more ways than one.
I feel like it’s important to see all that tension played out between the characters. There’s so much more going on than just “I want you; let’s have sex.” It’s never that simple. A good romantic suspense should have two kinds of tension: the tension of the suspense plot (will the bad guys win?) and the tension of the romance plot (will these two have sex and will they get together in the end?).
Often, writers make the mistake of having their characters give in to the sexual tension when it’s not logical. Would you stop for a quickie while running from the bad guys? I wouldn’t!
In writing a warrior hero and heroine, I had to let them be true to who they were–and I had to find that opportunity for the tender side of them to come out, that moment when they are each vulnerable and their defenses are down. It was a fun ride with Nick and Victoria!
If you’re new to HOT, you can start anywhere. The books are a series, but each stands alone. I hope you enjoy!
A rebel on the run…
Victoria Royal is a traitor. Or so the U.S. government believes. Victoria was once a promising sniper in the Army, but now she’s gone rogue—worse, she’s just landed in the middle of a Hostile Operations Team mission in the desert and blasted it all to hell.
Nick “Brandy” Brandon doesn’t expect to run into Victoria when he’s bugging out from a mission gone wrong. It’s been more than three years since she disappeared from the sniper course they were in together, and he’s finally stopped thinking about her killer curves and smart mouth.
But now she’s back—and she’s far more dangerous than Nick ever believed possible… Is she really a traitor? Or is there something more at stake? He has to decide fast—because time’s running out and too many lives hang in the balance…
